    Hi all,

I'm a bit new to meditation and have been using a dining room chair up to now. I wanted to buy something to make my practice feel more "spiritual", and was thinking about a stool, or a mat and some cushions - I don't really know what's best for me!!! Help!!!

    - Can anyone suggest something?
    - Where can I buy online? I just found www.justsitting.net a while ago and they have a link to a shop called AcreMountain (www.acremountain.co.uk) - the site looks good, but I haven't tried it yet - has anyone tried them?

    Thx

    Linda.

Meditation is to come to your true Self inside you.
    You dont need anything external.
I have always sat on the floor and always will.

    Hi there,

I'm not sure I'd agree with this. For those who can sit on the floor for 30 minutes without getting uncomfortable that's fine. But there are many who can't - I'm afraid I'm one of these people!! So I need some cushions or a stool to support me.

    Thx Linda.

I understand Linda, I myself have sculiosis and
suffer extreme pain during prolonged bouts of
    meditation.
Though I have attained a state of mind where
I can ignore this pain, see it as just another
sense and emotion that fades into the moment.

Ok, yea I wasnt aware of your back pains, sometimes
I speak things without thinking first, and I
aoplogize for my being assumptive and rude.
    Good luck to you :)
I would reccomend a lawn chair seat, with the
    legs cut off ~

    Hi there,

Thanks for the advice about the lawn chair with the legs cut off. I've taken another look at the meditation stools at acre mountain http://www.acremountain.co.uk/index.asp?function=DISPLAYPRODUCT&productid=27 and I think they would accomplish the same thing. They also look pretty stylish.

I think I will try ordering from them, and will let you know my experiences and let you know what the product quality is like. Watch this space I guess....

    Thank you - Linda.

Well, honestly this idea was not my own, but
from a member of this forum, Yogi Bhairava, who
recently published a book called Kundalini Dream ~
    kundalinidream.org
and in the book he tells how he used a lawn
chair, and over time, cut off the legs bit by bit
until he was comfortable with just the seat on the
    ground :)

I usually meditate by sitting on the bed with a pillow under my butt with my legs crossed.

You don't have to go out and buy "equipment" (whether you have back problems or not) to meditate. Just find a comfortable position (you can easily just lay on your back) to meditate.

I think I will object to this.
not every position is all right for meditating. the brain knows better than us.

when one tries to study in bed for example, he/she will most likely fail to concentrate and may easily fall asleep. this is because when the body is horizontal, the brain 'thinks' it's time to sleep, not to study.

likewise, there's a position for meditation. in zen and therefore zazen this has been stressed in every step. an erect spine is a must. not only because the brain needs it, also because that the chakras must be perfectly aligned and the qi energy must be free to flow upwards.

yes, there some meditative activities that can be done lying. yet someone new to meditation would most probably fall asleep prematurely :)

a simple, inclined wooden stool and a large, simple cushion below it would do the job for Seiza position, which is quite easier than Lotus or Half-lotus (even Quarter-lotus) to sit.

    namaste :)

The point of my message was: you don't need to go spending extra money to meditate. :)
