I came up with this idea today when I saw a 55 gallon drum that we have just sitting around. The dimentions are 22 in. diamiter (its a cylinder) and 34 in. tall. Im gonna paint the insides white (anybody know if chrome paint works better?) and use a 250 watt hps. Its cool cause its alreay got two holes in the top: one at the side, the other in the center each is 2-3 inch diamiter. These will be used as air intake/outtake. I think I will run the intake through a pvc to the bottom of the barrel so the air will reach it before being sucked back up the top. The beauty of this system is that I can bury it all, and it will be totally invisible! I'm thinking of rigging watering hoses that simply run from the top of the can to the plants, allowing me to water without removing the top. The only thing I am concerned with is the height of the barrel. I would definatly like suggestions as to plants that would grow well in a small environment like this. I'd like to find some small stavia strains. SO what do yall think of my idea, feasable? I think if one works, someone could have an invisible cash crop using several barrels!!!
If you can, get by e-conolight.com. Pick up either a 150 or 250 hps. preferibly the 250. it will be perfect for that size space and 1 plant if you can only buy local... Compact flourescents work ok but you'll need 4-6 of them for a harvest worthy your efforts. you can also get hid at lowes and home depot, but econolight has them beat hands down, including shipping.
You will always find some that recommend flourescents and some that recommend HID's (High Pressure Sodium and Metal Halide)! For those not paying the electric bill, the lower initial price of flourescents seems attactive. But after a few crops, if you anylize the results, you will understand the term "You can pay me now - or you can pay me later". On the other hand, HID's cost more to buy. But on a lumens per watt basis, or the quantity/quality of buds produced - they're hard to beat! You have to do the math to see which is really a better deal in the long run. Look at it this way, lots of people start out with flourescent lights and end up switching up to HID's because they get better results. Not too many start out with HID's and switch to flourescents by choice! By the way, the best light for your circumstance (IMHO), would be an HID, a dual type digital ballast (they can handle Metal Halide and HPS bulbs), in the 250 watt size. Just my $.02 worth
I changed strategies, the first thread expalins it. Also, any suggestion on the best intake/exhaust fans that will work with pvc? I'd like to be able to use this setup later in a cabinet/clone hydroponics box (this is all going for micro you see) I just thought someone might know of a sure fire product. (links would be nice)
I got the temperature in my grow room between 28 and 33 degrees C. is it ok or will it harm my plants
I like compact fluoro's the best. Practically cold to the touch, good lumen output (10,000) from a 125w. These things are beasts! And they only run $40, throw a few of em in a small cabinet grow setup and you can get excellent results with no heating issues! http://www.farmtek.com/farm/supplie..._bulbs-ft1_light_bulbs_1;pg103995_103999.html
