I was camping with an older friend a couple weeks ago, and he said that awhile back (1980's or 1990's), two brothers set out to an occean (I believe the Pacific?) on their boat, found a small island, and claimed it as a country. Apparently, they set up a post office, make-shift airport, and a health clinic and applied for aid from the UN. I believe they were granted a couple of million of dollars. I was wondering if any of ya'll knew of a news article or some other document, where I could read more into this subject. I'm really interested in it because it sounds like it would actually work, and with some hard work and effort, it could be done. Thanks everyone!
You cannot "find an Island and claim it" All Islands are territory of one country or another. You could however buy an Island and have your own country...But how you gonna stop someone from taking over your country by force? Better use some of that U.N money to buy some bad ass "security"....
Even buying it doesn't make it a new "country". Airport, post office, health clinic ... for two people?
Off the south-east coast of England there are sea forts, artificial structures left over from WW2, when they carried guns to protect coastal shipping, etc. Some of these are outside British coastal waters, and several were thus utilised by pirate radio stations during the 1960s. One was later - i970s, I think - declared an independent country under the name of SEALAND. Not sure if it's still going, or how it worked. Would imagine it would have been a pretty grim existence...
Of course, if I had half a brain operating - it's been a heavy day - I'd have googled it first. Sealand, of course, has a website: http://www.sealandgov.org/history.html
that would be super awsome if you could , go find an island and claim it, I wouldn't even care about money from the un. I would just love to be wild and free in the country 'dancing sun' haha
