1. The Hipforums announces it first ever fundraiser. After nearly 30 years online, we must ask our members and guests to help support the website. Thanks to years of ongoing financial support of our members, advertisers and volunteer admin staff, we have been able to keep the forums alive.

Now we must ask for help as available funds have all been used for our Internet server and other fees.

So please donate any amount to our PayPal account donate@Hipforum.com to keep the site going. If we can get enough for a few months fees, we won't need to nag you again!

...planets having no life and the other stars? What are they there for? I'd particularlly like to hear from the enlightened folk on this one.

they are there to remind us that nothing has to have a purpose in order to exist, if you want to look at it that way. also, while what we think of as life has very particular needs, that tend to be met only by worlds within a particular range of distance from their primary (i.e. star/sun), there is no basis for assuming there are not such planets, in that range, orbiting other stars/suns.

no basis what so ever for assuming ourselves to be the end all and be all of any of it, or anything other then one small example among the probable billions.

if all the sparows on our heads are numbered, ... er wait that's not how it goes, i mean if all the hares on our, ... well you get what i'm getting at, if each of us COUNT, as i'm sure everyone and everything does, well there's no reason to assume there aren't just as many worlds that DO have not only life, but people type life, living and laughing and jumping up and down and beating each other over the head because of what they believe in, as there are individuals of us.

each of these worlds more different from each other then we can immagine, and the people on them as different from the people on each and every other of them, and likewise from ourselves.

not gods, or ghosties, but just people that look different then anything we've ever immagined people to look like, but still just people.

that's one way of looking at it. i'm not making assumptions about the other planets in our own solar system either way. there are one or two likely candidates even there.

but when it comes to the planets of other suns, then i feel it a very safe speculation that indeed there are those which, like and unlike our own, do indeed harbour not merely life, but people type life. funny looking people type life to our own naive eyes, but people type life none the less.

In my shallow human mind there is no purpose in the universe/multiverse/existance. In yours there might be, so make up your own fairytale about it all.

they're just there, just like earth. there's no purpose to any of it. life happened to develop here on earth, but that probably took some fucked up circumstance to occur. with as many planets as there are out there, it is perfectly possible that some more of them also developed life, but it would still be a small percentage of them and we haven't really checked that many yet

I think just because none of our neighboring planets have CONFIRMED life doesnt mean we are alone in the universe. The odds are in the favor of life on other planets, albeit possibly very rare life.

In a near-death experience, a man asked an angel if there was life on other planets. The angel replied "The universe is filled with life".
