i run a little cafe. it's pretty sweet. just me and one other dude, but we always work alone. friends hang out and stuff though, so it's cool. plus, there's lots of coffee at a cafe.
ps. does anyone know how to do the accent like ought to be in the work cafe, using keyboard commands in linux (ubuntu)? it's "alt + 130" in windows.

Yeah, i'm only 17 years old, so, haha. Yeah, I've been trying to get a job at this Bob Evans that's right by my house, but for some reason they won't call me back. They said they were now hiring so i've been calling them for like 3 days now and they keep saying pretty much like "Don't call us, we'll call you"

^i fucking hate it when applicants keep calling and harrassing me. if we're going to hire you, we'll call you; calling and bothering me during lunch rush just hurts your chances if anything

That may be true for you, but the only way I've ever gotten jobs is when I actually came in the store a week or so after I gave them an application and I asked for an interview.

agreed.. i wouldnt say it hurts their chances though.. but it does get annoying.. when i was kitchen manager.. and people would call and ask if we were hiring i would say "no".. because they usually saw it in the paper.. and the ad always said "NO PHONE CALLS".. usually it takes a week+ to get apps together.. read'em.. decide who you want to interview.. when you can interview and such.. just be patient.. i always called a week after i put in an app if i didnt here from them

well then this thread can now be about whether ringing up or not is a good idea.

i get a bit annoyed if im not contacted back. the job i have now, at my local video store, i got from going in and talkin to the dude. all other applications failed.

but what i dont understand is that if a person is looking for a job, it is likely they do not want to spend a few weeks unemployed.

so all the people who really want a job may have got another offer if a potential employer takes a week or two to get back. that means any employer that doesnt get onto their applicants very quickly, is only going to have a pick of the applicants who have failed to get work anywhere else, or who are simply bumming around waiting for someone to give them a job (as opposed to someone looking to get a job). are these people the people who an employer wants to take under his/her wing?

^you have a point about people looking for a job wanting one immediately, but almost all employers wait at least a few days before contacting anyone, so it isn't like the good hires will get called back that day and the sketchy ones won't; they all have to wait for someone to get back to them.

again, going in and talking to the manager is your best bet, because most places get tons of applications and there isn't really anything to seperate the good from the bad ones and no one really has time to go through all of them. technically, it's best if you know someone who works there, but if not then you usually are best off just going in. it takes a bit of luck, since you probably don't know when the manager will be there and available, but it helps to use some common sense. for example, don't be like most people and wait until lunch or dinner time to go into a restaurant

I've been working at a machine shop for a week now. We make parts for machines that make cardboard boxes for the most part, we also make stripper poles and they have also made parts for NASA. It's pretty cool, I'm learning how to run some cool computer-controlled machines. Today I learned how to run the cnc lathe. I also dropped about a hundered pound steel part on my middle finger and now it's swollen as fuck. I work from 6:30 to 5:00 on most days, it's a long shift, but the money is pretty good considering I get plenty of overtime.

It's pretty crazy, huh? My mind has been blown away after seeing all these incredible, complex machines, Ive never seen anything like it. Our crew is pretty small, it's like seven guys and they all seem to be pretty cool. I'm usually pretty excited about going in there. Oh yeah, I also learned that coffee is my new best friend.
