A good friend of mine is Russian and has been talking about how great kefir is for you. I tried regular, I tried buttermilk flavor. Both were a little too sour and I didn't like them much. However, the stuff is sooooo good for you I decided to try it one more time and got some with strawberries. I really enjoy it and it's CRAZY good for you. It has more cultures than yogurt (they are different though) and has TONS of health benifits. It started over in Central Asia in Russian, Turkey, and Mongolia. Anyone else drinking it?
I've had certified organic kefir before...it definatley doesn't taste good by itself, I would always blend it into raw chocolate drinks... A lot of kefirs arent certified organic and milk that isnt organic is not really a safe health food choice...with all the antibiotics, pesticides, hormones that could be added in...even though it's a lot better than plain pasteurized milk(which is not saying much), it's probably not the best thing ever. A lot of already made kefir has added sugar too... which feed the bad bacteria kefir is supposed to fight off, so you have to look out for that as well. I prefer organic (unpasteruized) saurkraut or soy-free miso as neither have cholesterol and their both vegan and taste good by themselves
It's easy and cheap to make your own. Get some starter at a health food store and some good quality milk. mix em up and leave it set for a day or so depending on ambient temp(70 degrees=24 hours; warmer=shorter). When it's creamy and thick put in fridge. drink it plain or blend w fruit and/or honey. Keep some plain to start your next batch. You can do this like 7 times I think.
