i personally think the beatles theyre psycadelic music and hippy lyrics were ahead of the time, but then again the grateful dead really kinda established the festival gatherings as a common event.

in my opinion pink floyd definately ranks high, though i believe the bandmembers themselves kinda didn´t want to be part of it later on.

jimi hendrix is my ultimate hippie musician. might be kinda cliché, but listen to teh sounds of his guitar man! FREEDOM!!

greatful dead is the greatist jamband ever. And what I mean by jamband is the live concert music was by far the best. No question. I am glad to have cought a show before jerry died. Unbelieveable 110,000 people in highgate vermont in 95. WOW! havn't seen anything that even compares.

grateful dead, not only because of their music (though that was a part of it), but because they congregated so many people for so long and extended the movement from the 60s up into the 90s. And even though jerry's gone, im still groovin to the music.

    Strangers passing in the street,
By chance two separate glances meet,
    And I am you
And what I see is me.

Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service or Jimi Hendrix's bands seem like worthy nominations.

Hands Down! The Grateful Dead. No one else has captured the spirit for as long and in the same way that they have.

Pink Floyd may be a great band to listen to when you're stoned, but Syd was the only one who really fit the hippie mold at all. There's no fucking way you can tell me that Roger Waters is a hippie with a straight face. That said, I'd say the top three hippie bands are Greatful Dead, Phish, and Keller Williams and whoever he is or isn't playing with that particular day. They are all hippies and anyone who listens to their music is at least part hippie. Or maybe Dead Prez... they're vegans aren't they?

    The Dead or Phish

I don't think the Velvet Underground was "hippie" at all Shiny Sky.
Yeah they did drugs but so do Death Metal Bands. lol
