Alright, here's the story. I'm a guy, a heavy guy - XXL shirts, I mean - and I've always walked around in jeans and t-shirts, but man, that stuff just gets expensive after a while. Worse yet, not a lot of stuff suits me, and I can't keep wearing black t-shirts forever! So I'm turning to you guys for help - I want to start making my own clothes, but I don't know how! I've been scouring the internet for tutorials but to no avail - I guess the point is not to let the general population know how to make clothes, or you'll never sell any yourself ... but I'm trying to get started with making my own patchwork stuff, handmade shirts, whatever I can get away with wearing! So if any of you guys can lend me any ideas?
I suggest taking a beginner sewing class or get a friend who knows how to sew to give you some direction. Also, if you don't have a sewing machine, get one...hand sewing is not practical enough if you want to make a wardrobe for yourself (unless you are verrrry patient). The first thing I would do is learn to read/understand patterns and then do some pattern shopping. Most patterns in fabric stores are for women, but they have a few for men and maybe even more online...and no worries about large sizes because patterns often come in larger sizes. Once you get a better feel for sewing you will be able to just measure and wing it...but definitely learn some technique first. I wish you luck and applaud your ambitious attitude!
