Heh, I never wear them in the first place. For years now, no matter where I go while conducting business, whether it be the Office of one of my many private customers, the Attorney General, the Secretary of Finance, or the Governor himself, I go sans shoes. In fact, if I were to show up wearing them, folks would be shocked by my aberrant behaviour. I feel very fortunate to be in a place as tolerant as where I live. I could never live in a place like the mainland US.
I usually wear flip flops to work in case I need footwear for any reason, but I'm barefoot all day. I actually work in a very small office with all women, and they pretty regularly take theirs off too. It's pretty laid back, and definitely one of the best perks of the job. I feel very fortunate.
I, also, am one of the very blessed ones. Self employed, plantman, gardener, vegetation tweaker, site restorer, all round naturalist. In a cold climate. But shorts and barefoot half the year. Shorts the rest of it. Flops are all I have for those places where they apparently, American-like, won't loosen up.
One of the big reasons I decided to pursue art as my career was so that I didn't have to conform to a dress code. So in my job, I wear flip flops to and from work, and slip them off at my desk. The only time I put them back on is to use the bathroom (we have some rather delicate toilets that sometimes...explode...from too...much....information - you get the idea), and if I'm going to be hopping around to other people's desks. There are a alot of other folks here who go barefoot occasionally, so I never stand out. Although I AM the only one here who wears flip flops/is barefoot year round.
I'm another one for the 'never wear them in the first place' group. I work at a history theme park where we dress in period clothing; in prehistory, when it's nice weather quite a few of us are barefoot. Only when it's cold am I the only one there. Although my colleagues usually wear shoes when they arrive & leave in their regular 2007 clothes. I've worked at other jobs barefoot too, before I started my current job I worked at an internet helpdesk. There I was only joined for a couple of days when it was very, very hot in summer (it's not often hot here so most buildings don't have airco).
I wear shoes to work that have no backs, so I can just slide my foot in. I wear the purposely to work because m as soon as I get there. I kick them off at my desk. I only put them on when I have to walk somewhere else in the office, and if its just a quick trip to a network printer, or something, I'll sometimes go barefoot
Unfortunately not as much as I'd like to at my weekday job , although from the moment I get in my car at the end of the day to the time I arrive the following day they're off! However, my weekend job (as a harbour attendant / patrol officer) is the opposite, they're off nearly all the time - last weekend was the best though! I turned up to work shoe'd as it was my managers boss looking after things for a change as my manager was on holiday, but I soon kicked them off. He didn't say anything so I stayed barefoot, testing how far I could push it. Let's just say that they stayed in the same place where I dumped them all day, I left them there overnight & arrived the following morning barefoot (although it was a little chilly 15c, raining etc - typical British summer), & only picked them back up to take them home Sunday night. Considering some of the things I was doing though it did surprise me that he made no comment e.g. shifting around big concrete blocks that we use to secure mooring bouys to the seabed, putting a boat back in the water that had been on our slipway trolley (had to walk through lots of rubbbish which included bits of fibreglass) etc. So, after all of this potentially foot damaging work I spent all of Sunday afternoon on the harbour launch, just pottering around the harbour where I could come to no possible harm, or so I thought. The boat has a cabin with an open deck at the back, with access to the deck infront of the cabin by climbing up on the side of the boat (3ft high) and making your way down the side of the cabin - I'm telling you all of this as I'd just been on the front deck & was jumping down off the side onto the rear open deck (we all know the golden rule of barefooting to watch where your going, & after all the work I'd done that morning this should have been in the front of my mind - it wasn't!) but upon landing I felt this really sharp agonising pain in my foot - lifted it up to find a Bee still attached! Shook it off then spent the next 5 minutes trying to find the puncture mark amongst all the muck (found it in one of the only soft parts in the recess between my big toe & front pad). It hasn't put me off though - my shoes are indeed currently at work overnight again!
I usually wear flip flops to the office and take them off at ny desk. The girl who sits across from me and the girl in front of her also wear flip flops or sandals and we all end up barefoot during the day. We have no problem going from desk to desk or up and down our aisle barefoot. No one seems to care. A big bonus is that both of the girls have very cute feet.
Great story, sweetktg! Boats and bare feet just go together. I always kind of look on in perplexed wonder whenever I see "yachties" in their deck shoes...
Like you I also work in an environment that requires some sort of safety shoes or work boots. Growing up always being barefoot I hated wearing shoes to school, and in college went to classes barefoot as much as possible. Some classes I couldn't again for safety reasons. I work in construction, so I cannot be barefoot at work. The first thing I do when done for the day is to get barefoot, drive home or where ever, and stay barefoot until I have to go to work again. I drive to work barefoot and put my boots on before starting for the day. If I have to go someplace that "requires" footwear I have my sole less moccasins for that. They cover the tops of my feet, but keep my soles bare You have to make the most out of the time you have!!!
Soleless moccasins huh? I'm curious, how do they stay attached to the tops of your feet if there are no bottoms to them?
It's like this, I insert my feet in them through the normal opening. However my soles are on the ground, and the tops of the moccasins cover the tops of my feet. The tops of the moccasins go around the bottom just enough to cover my toes and to allow me to walk as I normally would if the moccasins had soles on them.
I bought a couple of pairs of moccasins at LL Bean when I went to college. Because I have big feet at the time it was difficult to find my size. For an extra cost they were made for me. I wanted one layer of leather on the soles ,even though they suggested more. Their obvious reason was for me to get longer wear from them. I wore the soles totally out in no time, but never threw them away, because I saw the benefit of being able to beat the "No shoes, No service" policy of many establishments. I still have both pairs today, no soles, and proudly wear them into everyplace I have go where the "No Shoes, No Sevcies" policy exist. For example yesterday I wore them to Target, drycleaners, the supermarket, and then to the local restaurant. No one said a word to me. My only footwear restriction is my job, construction, and I have to wear boots to work. Can't wait to get them off at the end of my shift.
Same here. What's even funnier is when you see people who have been barefoot on their boats, get off on the beach & tip toe carefully up the shingle & road (it saddens me to say this but it's the blokes that are the biggest wimps :&). I do get quite a few looks (hopefully envious ones) when I just go walking or even running barefoot on the shingle & road as if it was carpet. For once though I wish I hadn't been barefoot at work yesterday morning, as I was opening the gates to our compound (they're big wrought iron ones) obviously not paying too much attention when the gate caught up with me & took a big deep chunk out of my heal, but in some respects this was a blessing as what better excuse is there for the boss to be barefoot at work all day when in hurts like hell to put shoes on - so they stayed at home today
