ok so my friend pulls alot of all nighters just for the sake of it and stays up sometimes 2 or 3 days in a row , he told me when he gets to the second day he starts experiencing some weird things like moth like / butterfly like things flying around him , seeing alot of shadowy figures in other rooms , some small objects in his house appearing to move and some weird colours as if he was just after staring at a light for a while and looked away and also hearing things that aren't really there sometimes music and sometimes people talking , so i thought i'd try it out being bored and all but i got to the second day and then almost to the 3rd and nothing .. i just felt really tired and then was asleep for the whole day afterwards , so can you actually experience things like that by depriving yourself of sleep or what ? obviously even if you could it wouldn't be worth it staying up and then being wrecked the next day but i was just curious

hell yes u can ive done 2 weeks without sleep & had the craziest halucinations ever, & the worse part is theyre believable..id hear echoing laughter in sillence id hear people talking in the next room even though i knew the people i heard were a thousand miles away... id see animals watching me everywhere..sleep deprivation can actualy make u insane though.. schitsophrentics who go 3 days without sleep become psychotic..
sleep deprivation is not something fun to try to see pretty colors..its seriusly taking your mind & stretching it to its limmits

i've seen minor hallucinations after just one night not sleeping. personally, i'd much rather just dream and then be refreshed the next day

it's true. .. i've stayed up for long periods of time and experienced this, but .. it really takes too long and the exhausted feeling I get makes me not want to do it for "fun". . . I can feel much better spiritual answering through meditation so really there are no reasons i would do it. .. not to mention it isn't really healthy for your mind or body

Does it ever happen to you that before you go to sleep you see something like around your bed? Like a face or something or feel as though someone is beside you in the bed and you can feel like them touch your face or something. I know that this may sound crazy! I think that its called lucid dreaming or else maybe these are hallucionations? Any insight?

when you don't sleep a lot of stuff in your body doesn't get repaired and regenerated so your brain will start misfiring, so yah, you can get some crazy shit going down. Not something to do for recreation.

you're probably dreaming while half-asleep. it happens to me occasionally, more back in high school when i was more sleep deprived and would go half-asleep in class all the time. lucid dreaming is just dreaming while being aware that you are dreaming, so it isn't that. it could be a hallucination, but it seems more likely to be my first guess since it happens just before you go to sleep

Hippy Happy, look up Wake Induced Lucid Dreaming.

I start to see moths and butterflies circling me aswell. I hear music. I get paranoid.

The laughter thing reminds of this time a long tiem ago when I experimented with the occult. I tried summoning prankster spirits and I guess the spirits knew the best way to prank me is scare the crap outta me briefly. I heard A Cepello voices singing a song.

I probably would go insane if I stayed up logn enough to hallucinate at its best. when I let my mind go free adn see what It can think of I think of gothic, pagan influenced fantasy worlds adn beings. Horrific and scary, with some sort of livign breathign charm. Kinda reminds me of old gothic fairytales, and movies liek Pans labyrinth. this video http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ya3qmbeZZHA. when most people where young they had imaginary friends. I had an imaginary army of various creatures from folk lore. tall twisted beings, short deformed gnomes. Usually in my dreams I see this girl, she has a short grey beak instead of a mouth, a grey, dry, wrinkly face. Her eyes are voids of twirling white and dark red. shes always sitting down with her legs tucked cose, feeling around with her hands and tryign to see (looking for food) but her finger tips are wittled like a sharp stick. grey sorta foggy colourd skin. she wears a tattered dirty white frilly dress and has long black wet hair. Its safe to say, that Id go insane if I looked around and saw all sorts of these cryptic little beings.
Im rarely in the mood where I think of these things now. but its still very easy to create more in my head. usually when I think of fantasy I see much more than cryptic things. I see many wonderfull things. (and no, I dont believe these things are real, Im not psycho) This is why I wanna learn to paint.

Thanks I'm inmyunderwear. Ya it happens also like if I have been watching a scary movie or am in a bad mood before I go to bed. I could be just paranoid too. Its not fun though and scary because it all seems so weird. I don't do dugs either so its not as if I am tripping of them or anything. Ah well, it doesn't happen all the time so its easy to deal with. Thanks for your help and Natureboy, I'll look up Wake Induced Lucid Dreaming.

Sleep deprivation is NOT something you do for fun...ever.

From a person who is sleep deprived some days, it is quite the opposite of fun. Actually it is more along the lines of misserable.

Yes this is a common factor and the first sign of sleep exreating depravity, my father is a Doctor. If he stays up to long he will end up with a serious case of death. 7 or 8 days without sleep will kill him.
