I was wondering why gay people, myself included, enjoy overall the same taste in music? Why are most gay people into Madonna and or Kylie, Cher, Donna Summer etc. When I was younger I wasn't aware that Madonna and Kylie are huge in the gay scene but I considered myself a fan instantly. Could musical taste be a genetic thing? Just wondering, I'm curious about your thoughts!

i don't like ANY of those. never did. that kylie video had me staring in a stupor and drooling for a few months, though. good song. the rest of her stuff makes me want to kill people. but i think being only non-straight person in my crowd may have quite a bit to do with it. you tend to like the music you enjoy when you're with the people that make you feel the happiest, i guess.

never liked madonna either, hated disco. I like most all types of music and what I listen to depends on what I'm doing.

doing 3D graphics - classical or jazz
working out - alternative rock (SoaD, Linkin Park, Korn etc) something to get energized
driving around - alternative rock or top 40

I don't really believe you could group gays by their music or vise versa

I hate all those artists. I like almost exclusively indie rock, although I must admit that I like Mika. That's the "gayest" I go, and of course, Rufus Wainwright. But who doesn't like him?!

I'm into extreme metal, minimalist, classical, really old blues, and a bunch of other stuff. Naver cared much for any sort of dance music.

I highly doubt musical preference is genetic with sexual prefences. I've never bought any of those artists CD's or downloaded them. They aren't my style of music, i prefer alternative, rock etc etc.

I actually pretty much only listen to dance/club music. Or "techno", if that's what you want to call it. I'm clueless when it comes to anything mainstream or rock or whatever. I do however love hip hop. Like Crime Mob or Paul Wall.....I could dance all night to that shit too.....

I mainly listen to classic rock. My favourite bands are Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. I usually enjoy most types of music though. None of those artists particularly appeal to me but I think I could survive a roadtrip with any of their albums playing the entire time.

Yes, everyone here is listening to rock music or something of a heavier kind but you can't deny 'gay artists' can you? I was just curious how one becomes one.

What the fucking hell? I detest all of those artists. Please dont generalise like that! It's fucking frustrating and it makes me want to scream and hit things. I assumed that gay people were more intelligent, but I guess you can't generalise . Oh wait, thats just what you did.

    Well I love all music.

My top played are ween, air, moby, peaches, scissor sisters, moe, madonna, beck, the pixies, the cure, cat power, the books, david bowie, beethoven, missy elliot, and i enjoy jam bands.

My music tastes are all across the board. Up until a year ago I only listened to one genre and was a music snob. It's more fun to listen to everything.

I see. As much as I understand what you mean by being a "music snob", I don't think that having a specific taste in music is at all snobbish. I really just don't like that stuff. I cannot stand Moby (sorry  ) or Madonna or any of those pretentious bimbo assholes who can't actually sing and sell their music through being smutty on stage and camera. Sorry - I just feel that way.

Let me ask you one thing though, Mushie - do you play a musical instrument or have you ever? Because I feel that if you've put a lot of time into learning an instrument or learning to sing, hearing this so-called "music" that you hear on MTV and such is really frustrating - the majority of those people have little talent and really just get their records published because of their image.

    No I don't.

However, all of my friends do.

I don't consider Madonna or any of the other music I listen to (besides shitty rap) "MTV music". Madonna does have talent; she is on a completley different level than britney spears or others like that. I don't mean to sound defensive because I'm not really that big of a fan. But her music is not tobe confused with mtv teeny boppers.

I don't think having a specific taste or genre of music that is a favorite is snobbish. I consider someone who thinks that their music is the best, bad mouths other music, and won't give anything else a chance.

    Joni Mitchell, anyone?

I've been told I have the musical tastes of a seasoned lesbian (which sucks because I'm a guy). Joni Mitchell, Dar Williams, Ani Difranco....

Oh, and pretty much anything for that matter. I travel and mooch alot, so I can't afford to be picky.

It is a hippie forum, so maybe you guys just aren't into mainstream gay music - like Madonna, Cher, etc.

No, maybe the reason most people dont listen to that type of music *refrains from badmouthing* is because there happen to be so many alternatives out there!

I'm sorry, but Cher is just godawful. Honestly - that woman is so phony and insincere it really annoys me.
