Those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it. That statement is total crap. Truth is history repeats itself over and over again (you think Hitler never heard about Napoleon's disastrous invasion of russia), those who remember it are just better prepared.

Okay, imagine a situation where we invaded a country with a half assed force. this was based on fear mongering and completely untrue justification. Imagine if this happened just after another, more popular, and arguably more justified war*.
Imagine thinking we'd be greeted as liberators, and instead faced an entrenched local insurgency and guerilla warfare. Imagine being stuck in an unwinnable quagmire for decades. Imagine loosing global support because of a long trail of war crimes.

And you have the occupation of the phillipines.

The Spanish-American war is often called the forgotten war. Thanks to yellow journalism, cultural racism, and bullshit doctrines we waged a quick war that ultimately routed the spanish from the western hemisphere.
Almost as an afterthought president Roosevelt (our only president to read Anna Karenina while on a three day quest for cattle rustlers) decided to bring christianity to then overwhelmingly catholic phillipines.
Instead of being greeted as christian missionaries, we were greeted with gunfire.
Although we were able to quell the catholic uprisings in the north through brute force and atrocities, we were never able to stop the guerilla muslims in the south.
The occupation lasted until the Japanese invaded, and after the war we supported the rebels as the new phillipine government, ending our protracted occupation (at least direct occupation, i'm pretty sure we still had military bases in the area, but they weren't charged with peace keeping)...

    Kinda similar to Iraq, no?

sooo.... my idea for the future of iraq is that we'll provoke an invasion by Iran, then when the Iranians are expelled by the Iraqis we'll back whatever militant group was able to assume power...

Expelled by the Iraqis, aren't they welcoming us and our arms into their country? Isn't that what we are being told by the current administration? Which Iraqis are we talking about are there good ones and bad ones?

I personnally think the Iranians are smarter than that.

If I was Iranian right now I'd be welcoming British soldiers into my waters to waterski, and smiling at all the western powers.

Imagine how frustrated the neo cons will get, when not met by opposition.

Has anyone else heard the story of the Iraqi police and militia open fire on a spec.ops unit making an arrest on a police Lt. The only news agency I saw that covered the story was MSNBC. It happened on Saturday 7-14, yesterday.

I heard about it. Shows the depth of Iraqi support for the US doesn't it?

Yet all the presidential reports say it's Al Qaeda...., funny how we always have a boogieman to blame.
