I moved to Arcata last year. I like it so much better than Southern California, even the rain. This is the first small town I've lived in--I like the slower pace. People are usually very friendly, too. Rents are cheaper than in Orange County or San Diego, but still kind of high for a small town in the middle of nowhere. I could get a place for less in Portland, for example.
There's a group trying to start an Eco-Hostel in Eureka on Humboldt Bay. http://www.northcoastjournal.com/121505/news1215.html I think this is a pretty cool idea, although I hope it's not going to end up being too expensive for the average hippie or hosteler.
in a year or two i'll be living in humboldt....maybe around arcata or just outside of it...i'm used to being isolated in the boonies so being far out doesnt bother me besides redwoods and ganja, what the hell does one do there?
Cow tipping, bird watching, hiking, music, coffee, farmers market, festivals, dive bars...... in that order, lol.
