The best I can advise is know a few of dealers and have a scale. Weed is a completive business so it’s cool to shop around.

if your not experianced it will be pretty hard to tell

one time we eyed out 4 different measurements of weed, then bust out a scale, I won the competition being off only like a total of .8 grams from the 4 piles

and in terms of density, it's pretty hard to tell even for experianced people, the only way i know how well its gonna bust up is when i first cut into it with scissors, the way it breaks up and sticks is how i can tell

Until you've bought weed in different quantities quite a few times it's best to use a scale to verify the weight. In time you'll develop an eye for weed and be able to tell the weight pretty accurately just from holding the bag and looking, but in the meantime go with a scale.

a gram is about the size of a quarter...an 1/8th should spread out all the way across the bottom of the bag but like everybody else said you cant eyeball how dense it is. i remember we had a nice nug that was only half the side of the bag and was about 4.5g(an 1/8th is 3.5) and rock hard.(meaning it's more dense). and a 1/2 ounce is about half of a ziplock baggie. and an ounce is a full bag.(normal sandwich bags)

Basically what people have said about a gram is right. It should be around the size of your thumb. If it looks dry and/or puffy then it should be a little bigger (less dense), if it looks wet and/or compact then it should be a little smaller (more dense). Now with that said all you need to do is some math: an 1/8 is about 3.5 grams so that means you should have the equivelant to about 3 and a half buds (or the equivilent) the size of your thumb. A 1/4 should be about 7 grams which means you should have 7 buds the size of your thumb. Etc, etc. This is of course not as accurate as getting a scale. You can get a food scale at GMC for 10-15 bucks or a digital scale for more. If you get a food scale then you will have to adjust it every time you weigh but it costs much less. If you get a digital scale I suggest getting it online because it cheaper. You could also ask your dealer to weigh it in front of you, most of the dealers I buy from will not do that but the ones that are my friends will (and I trust them anyway so I ussually don't ask).
