I am doing my Bachelor of Degree in Adelaide, there are few reason i chooses Adelaide for my study, the prior reason is my girlfriend was here half a year ahead me before i arrive on last year July, landed on the Adelaide land with full of excitement and happiness, cause i know i am gonna be going to further milestone when graduate after 1.5 years. I travelled around in Australia 2 years ago attended a short seminar in Adelaide,it was my first stop, then headed to Melbourne and Sydney after 2 weeks spend in Adelaide. I was impressed with the menace and politeness of local people and the cleanliness of city of Adelaide at that time, that is the reason i am currently here for my Bachelor study. But SAD thing begin, a dream turn into a nightmare after a few weeks i arrived in Adelaide last year. People yelled at me when their car passed beside me shouted to me "Fuck" or shout at my girl friend "slut". That was fine fro me in the first i do not think that this is a racism behind those word, because i witness the same situation where a local people yelled at the Australian as well. Until last night,i am totally disappointed with Adelaide and thinking of quickly finish my study then leaving this place where most of the local doesn't seem to welcome of my existence, and mind you i pay $1900/subject for my study where an Australian themself only pay $600 for it. The local government emphasis on foreign income on education industry in Adelaide, in fact it ranked second most sources of income to Adelaide but most of the Adelaide people never realise and appreciate on that. What was happen last night is, when i was walking on my way from City back to North Adelaide with my girl friend just thought that a slow winter walk keeping my body warm, there was a car(small and old like a scrap metal),4 paeople including the driver coming from behind slow down on beside us then throw a few eggs towards our direction, yelled and laugh a loud, facet with such a sudden incident me and m girl was totally shock and being frighten by those action. My first reaction was checking on my girl friend to make sure that she were fine then give them a Little foul word back. Ok, i thought that the story was end after that, and mind you this is not the first time me and my girl encountered this, first time it was along Frome St(and shame on you, there was a driver who driving a BMW) the egg hit my girl friend pants, and she was crying after that, i believe she is just like me feeling really disappointing and hurt . Back to last night, we continue our way back to North Adelaide, just like we thought we were near to our house, again that car with full of uneducated local people coming from the front this time heading toward us, this time they throw a plastic fill with water on us, our pants and shoe are wet. after a few time of this bad luck incident my girl friend start becoming brave enough in fact she is the one shouted "Fxxx Off Stupid" this time. Back home with a little tired and sad to Adelaide, again really thinking of leaving this place as soon as i can. I am just not sure, are those egg and water bomb are mean to Racist or they are just playing fun and fool on anyone they came across on the street? Australia government keep promoting on multicultural society where i had visited to Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland and not to forget the friendliest Western Australian during my stay, people are really getting along well between local and foreigner. Yes, every person have their own value and perception, racism does appear anywhere but it is the worse in Adelaide. I have never thaught the the place i am keeping promoting to my friend as a must place to visit if you come to Australia because of the clean and the famous Barossa Valley turn me into feeling sour. Now Adelaide are really turn me down. I am not going to mention about Adelaide again when there is a time being ask about Australia from my friend. I don't know, facing with those situation really bringing me thinking on the bad scenario, or anyone within this forum can may be tell me that Adelaide are welcome to anyone. And i am here because i want to learn a good thing from Australian never hope to see the failure.
yes this is all very interesting but can you break this into paragraphs its almost indigestable in its present form?
Hopefully those my word are not bring any offence to Australian, i love Australia, this is the really i am back after 2 years and my family of 10 were visited me having holiday at Gold Coast on last Summer, and they are having a good impression to Australia just like they thaught Adelaide would be the same as they saw in Queensland.
Hi Japankiller. Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time in Australia. Never been to Adelaide personally. A few years ago my best friend was at a protest at Woomera in South Australia (where the Govt used to incarcerate illegal refugees, some new born babies). He's or "middle eastern appearance." The police singled him out, tackled him, beat him up, arrested him, strapped his hands with cable ties for seven hours (it took him days to get feeling back into his hands) locked him up for days without charge and eventually charged him with several serious offenses including assaulting police. Fortunately a video of the "arrest" came out and all charges were dropped. Understandably he doesn't like South Australia too much... So I can only comment on Aus as a whole and can't comment on Adelaide, but yeah, I've heard bad things about SA. But about Australia. For almost a century politicians and the powers that be exploited xenophonia, partricularly the fear of the "yellow hordes" taking over, for their own means. This trend continues with the Government and a corrupt media villifying muslims in order to keep Australian's supporting the "war on terror." Finally the Austalian Nation itself is illegal under our own laws as we do not recognise Aboriginal sovereignty. If the indiginous people of Australia were able to access their rights the huge mines and pasturalists might have to hand some of their profits over... Its complicated. That being said, having travelled I can say that a white person in asia doesn't always have it easy... infact sometimes it feels there is a big sign hanging over ones head saying "please rob me." Racism is everywhere and whilst I openly admit that there is a problem in Aus it also must be pointed out that Sydney is the most multi-religious and second most multi-cultural nation on earth with far few racial problems than most cities with high levels of immigration, is regularly listed in the top five best cities for migrants to move to. Melbourne is always in the top three best cities for migrants and often number one. Having grown up in Sydney I hang with people from all over the place (mates include: egyptian, lebanese, serbian, polish, italian, india, tongan, fijian, viet (of chinese decent), phillipino, chilian and jewish and none of them complain of being subjected to racism and I have never seen one of these guys mistreated anywhere in Oz coz of their ethnicity. Most visitiors leave Oz saying we are the nicest people they have ever met and it only takes one generation of migrants to proudly state "I'm an Aussie!" I'm just saying this because I find it a little hypercritical when people say "I had this bad experience in Australia and so now I have decided to stereotype all Australians as racist." Being "egged" isn't necessarily a racist thing. In fact if they didn't shout racial slurs as they threw the eggs I would say they were just out having a bit of fun... you may have noticed some aussies get enjoyment out of such stupidity... Don't take it to heart. maybe if there is a spate of eggings in your town you should get yourself a half dozen and return fire... you might make some mates... Just wanna say that most people in Australia, are like most people in the world, beautiful and kind. Don't let the few bad eggs (like the pun?) ruin you opinion of an entire nation. Cheers J
i have been born and raised in adelaide.. and nearly everyone gives us adelaide folk shit for living here but im sure theres many worse places to live in australia.. i suppose it is a bit boring here and not too much goes on but so what? the lifestyle in adelaide is very peaceful and free...
Wow that's offensive poz. Particularly when you don't list a single reason for such a strong statement. japankiller: With all due respect, I too found your post hard to read (EG: What's a Bachelor of Degree?) but regardless, I'm very sorry to hear that you're having a bad time here (in my opinion) in the best state of AUSTRALIA. I've been to every state now (except Northern Territory) and haven't found a place that's as friendly, easy going and pleasant to live/work in. Hobart (Tasmania) and Perth (Western Australia) are close - but there are many reasons I still prefer Adelaide. Let me just say (regarding your experiences) there are a minority of 'bad' people in every town, city, state and even nation that you will ever go to. PLEASE don't let a minority of 'idiots' ruin it for you. There are PLENTY of South Australian's that would welcome you with open arms and (if you'll let them) become your life-long friends and I encourage you to go out and find them. You'll NEVER regret it
adelaide rules mate, if you dont like it go to melbourne or sydney and get put up with the shit from the lebs
Nothing wrong with this little country hic town guys....I was born and brought up in here, and still live here (it's f*cking Phenominal). i'm a northern suburbanite aswell. Its the same everywhere, you are gonna get tools wherever you live!
Visited Adelaide for the 2nd time a couple of weeks ago, and I must say 3. things stuck out to me, A: You're houses (those little brick whatsamajiggys) are radd! B: And its a clean city, far cleaner than some of the streets I've been down in brizzy C: The beaches are gorgeous (dont know about your Great White Inhabitants) Only in adelaide would you visit a local pub with its own brewery & have their pet goat in the parking lot, nudge your crotch! CLASSIC!! * Overall comment= Adelaide is nice!
Hi Japan killer, Firstly I think you're command of English is pretty good, considering that English is the hardest language in the world. I have read much worse attempts. Don't let it get you down mate, there are racists, yobo's and idiots all over the world. It doesn't matter where you go, there's always a few morons around. Just hold your head up and ignore them. I've found Adelaide to be a very pretty place, it's pace is considerably slower than say, melbourne or sydney, and that's not a bad thing. Recently I went to Malaysia and I definately felt like I was being looked down upon because I didn't wear a berka. But never mind, each to their own. Even in my own country it has happened to me in some degree. Once in Porland Victoria, I was walking down a street with my partner (who looks very much like an aboriginal elder, but he's not), his parents and grandparents were English. Anyway, as we walked along all of the Aboriginals that we passed smiled at us and said g'day. I thought this was wonderful. But later on, I walked down the same street alone. I smiled and said g'day to all the people I passed. Not one of these indigenous people spoke or smiled. At the time I didn't realize that they were being friendly because I was with what they thought was an aboriginal. Go figure. So don't let it upset you. And don't under any circumstances retaliate with your own eggs, if these idiots get annoyed the consequenses could be nasty. If it continues, I would have a word with a policeman. No one has the right to hassle another person for any reason. cheers Hippymuso
