Is there a difference between using limewire or something to download music and jacking a CD from target? If so why? I didn't know where to post this, so I hope this is cool. Oh ya and D_MAN is commie-dev minus communism, if you want to know
There is a difference. If you illegally download copyrighted music, you are violating copyright law (since you don't have permission to copy it) but you not physically stealing something. If you steal a CD from a store, the you are not violating the copyright law, since it is a legal copy of the copyrighted material but you are stealing (theft) of a physical thing. Also I'm not lawyer and this is not legal advise but is my understanding of it.
I agree. Also when you steal from a shop you're not only stealing an artists product, but also ripping of the shopowner who has to make a profit of those cd's.
you never pay for air, but I've never stolen oxygen. It's not stealing if you download it. There's no item to be taken and there's nothing lost from anyone. Stealing in the traditional sense doesn't work here. It may be copywright infringement, but that's just words on paper that some idiot with money signs into effect. Cross a land border and its suddenly not wrong. There's no theft in listening to some sound waves.
Keep in mind that by downloading music you mainly 'steal' from the record company, not the artist. A lot of the time the record companies are ripping of the artists. I support the artists by going to their shows, and buy their records there if I have the money and sometimes I even buy a record from a store. I always try music out by downloading it and if it's from dead artists I don't regret it one bit. I'm poor, I'm not making any money out of it, by burning and selling it or something. Internet is great for these things, it offers more opportunities for underground artists who don't get the attention they need to get otherwise via a commercial record label.
The main difference is that your not going to get arrested for downloading music, but you might for stealing a CD.
Limewire may be free and easy to get music, but beware it opens doors that will eventually fuck up your computer.
well, yes. yoinking things requires you to get off your ass whereas, downloading shit from the internet prevents you from getting off your ass and it is completely void of the adrenaline rush. =]
Me neither of course! I just download a lot . New albums to check it out, old stuff just for keeping, I don't like cd's anyway. Fortunately most bands I dig also have vinyl pressings. But I have to admit I don't buy every good record of new artists, but I can't do that anyway. Lots of good music is coming out really!
I'm more of an album collector myself. I also almost never play my records, I just use the mp3 albums instead. Don't even have a recordplayer at the moment.
DSOTM - If everyone who downloaded music got arrested than their wouldn't be anymore room in the jails. Hell, that might be the one thing that would spark a revolution LOL
music is FREE to me! i always use limewire! if radio stations play music and i can record it onto a tape any time of day and nobody says a word, whats the difference between that and limewire?!
i hear what everyone is saying (figure of speech). most people dounload music from sites that make you pay per song. the people who use the "free" (or "shared") downloads, do so at their own risk. but what about those of us that rip and or burn cd's that were barrowed from friends? i know i'm not the only one with a few cd's of this sort.
I like ripping my own CDs because it's like quality control. I know that if I rip my own CDs it will always be 320 kbps. But when I download I can be getting anywhere from 32 kbps to FLAC.
You can't steal music. Music is in the air, it's free! If an artist makes music for money, then i'll hapilly steal him. Music (art generally) should have nothing to do with profit and money Music should be free for everyone. I buy cd's and vinyl's only if i want to: 1. Support a new artist i like 2. have a cd/vinyl for my collection (whether I dig its artwork, or it is a masterpiece)
