It seems pretty important to me. I think it goes together with ecology and respecting the earth and your body and being responsible for your presence here, your long term health and the health of your children, not to mention the idea of not supporting soulless mega-corporations that just want to exploit people and don't give a crap about them. Is this pretty obvious or should hippies just put whatever they want in their bodies like pop, coffee, junk food, alcohol, meat, sugar, hard drugs, McDonalds, etc? Where do you draw the line if at all?
I try to live very healthy on some aspects, I don't eat fast food, only home cooked meals and only quality not too fat meat, I'm a very healthy weight, I sleep enough etc. and I don't drink caffeine anymore and I don't smoke cigarettes. I use a few harddrugs though (just shrooms and LSD, and weed if you can call it a harddrug), but thats about where I draw my line. I don't think you could say everyone hás to live healthy but it just feels better to do so.
I've known hippies who were heavily into health; they would eat all organic food, exercise regularly and practice yoga and meditation. I've also known hippies who would get high on whatever was available and then pig out on junkfood and crash in front of the TV. I remember one guy in particular who would start off his day with a big healthy bowl of wheat germ, then go snort coke. It takes all sorts.
I agree with this. I like to push myself over the line sometimes though, and I do smoke cigs. I love cafeïne and fat meat as well actually. I just take it in moderation, well, except for the cafeïne I guess.. Everyone should decide it for theirselves obviously, but as a 'hippie' I suppose you better be true to yourself. I keep my body healthy, but that doesn't mean I feel like skipping all the fat meat, nicotine and alcohol from my menu.
Yeah, the important thing is not to be hypocritical. I denouce large corprations all the time, so I don't eat from them or buy their shit. If I did, I'd stop with the denouncing cause that'd make me a hypocrite. And fuck, there's no such thing as a "hard" drug. There's just drugs you like and drugs you don't like. me, I've only come across one I didn't like, and that was PCP. Scary shit, man.
i'm just amazed that the term 'hippie' is still being used today, with any seriousness. but really, the hippie movement was founded upon the precepts of love, peace, environmental awareness and of course, healthy food, mostly vegan. of course, there's the mindset of those who would employ the term 'hippie' to insult or indicate that one was outside of the mainstream of society, but such people will always find labels to apply to those they can't understand. eat healthy, no matter what you call yourself.
i try to be healthy ish i eat fruit, drink water and the excersise i get is riding my bike playing football sit ups push ups weights. however i think i will take it more seriously as i get older like become vegan eventually
I don't think I would look at an unhealthy person, and think that they were a hippie. Hippie to me is someone who respects themselves enough to be healthy. They breastfeed their children if they can, give them the best possible start, and nourish their bodies and souls as they grow. Your list of possible offenders are not in themselves so horribly bad, unless they constitute the majority of the persons food and drink intake. I drink natural soda, like coffee (2 cups a day), alcohol every evening (wine-8oz./ or ale 12 oz.), and use organic sugar moderately, and have even gone to McDonalds about 2 times in the past year (for old times sake-was around in the 70's-I enjoy the condiments and convenience and price)-I do feel guilty when I do rarely eat there ( questionable meat sources, preparation vibes etc.), but I still consider myself a health oriented HIPPIE. I draw the line on hard drugs, and only smoke herb. I raised 5 children and always thought it was important to stay clear , aware, and alert. I still do.! I believe that all things on this earth are good (well maybe not all-there are exceptions), and that "moderation" is the key to happiness and healthiness and hippieness.
Eat whatever the fuck you want, honestly. Do not let some self-imposed stereotype, or especially the expectations of others with the same self-imposed stereotype, decide what to eat for you. If you want to eat healthy, then do not eat healthy because you're a "Hippie". Eat healthy because you are a human who's concerned about his health. Associating your diet with being a "hippie" is ridiculous. One day you may just grow up, realize that you're not a "hippie", and what then... will the diet go out the window with the stereotype? Honestly, I'm not going to tell you what to eat. It's your decision, just make sure to live with the consequences of any diet.
I smoke cigs, like Fat Tire Beer, and have a serious caffeine addiction. But I am trying to do better. Not so that I can fit in with the "hippies", just because I know I should. I see a lot of people asking "as a hippie, should I....", Just love others, respect yourself, and try to help the planet. Other than that, deep personal beliefs should remain personal. Live and let live. Peace, Love, Run Naked.
Strongly Agreed! But I Do belive Healthy food Gives One a healthy mind. Bu really if You can live and accept the concequences of any diet.. good or bad.... Eating should be your choice.. Not that OF a steriotype.
I think people should be healthy, but I don't thank it has to do with being a hippie except for the boycotting corporate machines and meat, but still you can still be a hippy if you partake in those things
Seems to me, being a hippie is all about doing what you beleive is the right thing, and those beleifs fall in the category of not thinking inside the box, without selfish intentions and with a love for one's fellow man. Those are all very good things, and seems to me that they are things which should be done whether we call ourselves hippies or not. It is responsibility, and that is really what being a hippie is all about. It is about forgetting about your responsibility to the almighty dollar and to the establishment, and worrying about your responsibility to those things which matter more. This might also inspire people to eat better and stuff, but hey, the hippie mindset is something that should be carried beyond the time when you are a teenager and wanna wear tie-dye. It should extend into adult hood when/if you wear a suit and tie to work. If it doesn't then you are truly just a sell-out yuppie.
eat whatever you want. whatever makes you feel good. eat healthy if thats what you like. i actually prefer that..i feel alot more energized.
