I used to be friends with someone who would announce his vegan lifestyle. During my two years of contact I cam to realize that we would never have a conversation without his stating in some way, shape or form, "Well, I as a vegan..." I asked him if he made this declaration to everyone all the time. He thought about it and said that he wasn't sure. Yet, he felt compelled to let me know about it. I had experimented with vegan living and found it too restrictive for my own lifestyle. I don't pass judg(e)ment on those who choose it and live with it. The last straw with him and me came about when he flat out refused to get a varicella vaccination. He refused to take a vaccination that had been derived from an animal. http://www.vegfamily.com/vaccines/are-vaccines-vegan.htm He was born Jewish. I told him that the laws of Kashruth state that the laws can be broken when life or bodily health are at risk or the potential of risk. He saw things differently. And so did I. Don't mean to preach, but getting vaccinations is an important thing. I wonder if anyone else has come across this concern.
Well everyone has different values. I understand though, I don't like having friends that don't take care of their bodies but what can ya do.
If you want mercury, aluminum and autism, yeah, maybe vaccines are important.... http://www.tetrahedron.org/articles/vaccine_awareness/ingredients.html And here is Dr. Mercola's list of ingredients : In addition to the viral and bacterial RNA or DNA that is part of the vaccines, here are the fillers: aluminum hydroxide aluminum phosphate ammonium sulfate amphotericin B animal tissues: pig blood, horse blood, rabbit brain, dog kidney, monkey kidney, chick embryo, chicken egg, duck egg calf (bovine) serum betapropiolactone fetal bovine serum formaldehyde formalin gelatin glycerol human diploid cells (originating from human aborted fetal tissue) hydrolized gelatin monosodium glutamate (MSG) neomycin neomycin sulfate phenol red indicator phenoxyethanol (antifreeze) potassium diphosphate potassium monophosphate polymyxin B polysorbate 20 polysorbate 80 porcine (pig) pancreatic hydrolysate of casein residual MRC5 proteins sorbitol sucrose thimerosal (mercury) tri(n)butylphosphate, VERO cells, a continuous line of monkey kidney cells washed sheep red blood cells
Varicella is for chicken pox! Personally I wouldn't make someone's refusal to get a chicken pox vaccine a "last straw" with them. IMO, that is a vaccine of convenience so parents don't have to take a week off of work to tend sick kiddoes. Three of mine have had the disease, and I had it as an adult, and it was itchy and uncomfortable, but not life-threatening or anything.
yeah, if that's the vaccination for chicken pox, I'd have to agree with him. I never got it and my children aren't getting it either. Some vaccinations really aren't that important.
Agreed it's the man personal choice and his body. Since it comes from animal I would have refused to and been hardened in that decision. I have to ask why that is the last straw?
I'd love to see Duncan answer a thread he starts at all, and particularly this one. I opted my son out on chicken pox. When I got a flu vaccination, I used an inhalant which does not have mercury/ thimersol as a preservative. I did weight the grown on egg protein part, and made the decision based on the potential (and likely) use of other animal derived drugs if I came down with the flu, which I did like clockwork until I started getting the vaccine.
Seems a shame to fall out over something that insignificance; but guess it's for the best, as you couldn't agree to disagree. I would only get a vaccine if totally necessary, having researched carefully before hand. I'm naturally cynical of drug companies and government policy, and getting vaccinated is quite traumatic for me anyway. The chicken pox vaccine is absurd really, as the disease is non-life threatening. I may well be immune to it anyway (I had a fair bit of exposure to it as a kid but didn't catch it). I haven't even had the MMR [well don't think so, as I got mumps] and am doing just fine.
My mum caught chicken pox age 42, just after giving birth to me, and she is now 61 and going strong I worked with children who had it a few months back and just got a bit sniffly and itchy...id probably ganed imunity as a child, even though my mum says i never showed any signs of having the pox So as the others have said, it was the guys choice, hardly a "last straw", and that ingredient list makes me shudder I havent had many vaccines. Meningitis when i was about 11 and a few as a baby, but no MMR or any of that stuff
varicella - as in chicken pox? Even with my son, whom I ignorantly vaccinated against everything but the kitchen sink I refused this vaccine. Why? Because it just wasn't worth the risk. Chicken Pox is rarely fatal in children... but in adults, it is FAR more dangerous. Never mind that the number of deaths quadruples, it lasts longer and can have serious side-effects in adults. Since the Varicella vaccine is NOT a life-long vaccine I can only see putting off becoming exposed until your adult years as highly dangerous. And then there are all of the other reasons already listed as well... but even when I didn't know ANY of those reasons - I couldn't justify this one. BTW... that Autism threat? It's real. My son will be living with the results of my ignorance for the rest of his life. Makes me re-think EVERYTHING a doctor tells me now! love, mom
