This just annoys me! Why do doctors always prescribe anti-depressants without thinking of their harmful effects like on somebody that doesn't need them?

I have been to several doctors for general anxiety disorder. I tell them that I have anxiety attacks, worried all the time, can't sleep, etc. Then they just right off the bat prescibe one of the drugs. I almost think that it is some ploy with drug companies to get people one these drugs.

Anyways, I had a bad reactions to several of these, such as lexapro, celexa, buspar. They made me think about suicide, be really withdrawn, exhausted, physically fatigued, etc. Then, another doctor told me that these drugs are like putting garbage into your body and gave me a b-12 shot and sent me home.

I just don't get why they always prescibe an anti-depressant, for someone like me that is anxious, not depressed . Maybe they just don't prescribe xanax or something anymore because of people that abuse these pills.

Everybody says goes talk to your doctor when you need help. I have tried to find a good one, but they all seem the same anymore- impossible!

    Any thoughts?

I too have had a lot of anti-depressants perscribed to me with horrible reactions to most of them. I had depression & anxiety and had heard from my neighbors who have the same health as me-bad- They said something about Effexor and I mentioned it to my doc. and it has been working like a charm.

I used to have bad panic attacks from being so anxious, & actually took xanax because it got so bad. But Effexor is an anti-depressant/anti anxiety med. and has almost taken my anxiety & depression away completely! Which is even more than I had hoped for.

It was a nice relief to not feel like a complete mess anymore, and I must have gone through at least 6 or 7 anti-depressants and "cocktails" of medication to actually get it right for me. Since I hate taking pills that was like torture but I think in the long run it was worth being happy & content in the end. *: )

Good luck with treating your anxiety, I hope it all works out for you~

I just got on celexa again this morning...I am so unsure over my life I feel like just driving away from everything and everyone and starting over-alone and i don't know if I am being rationale or not. My doctor re-perscribed me celexa...I really hope it helps to sort out my emotions.
I know in the past I thought I didn't need anti-depresents and I really did. I suaully know in about a week if they are working or if I don't need them. I either feel better or tired. Celexa I know is used for a variety of things; not just depression, even though it is catogorized as an anti-depressent. I am using wellbutrin for my adhd and that is classified as an anti-depressent, but it actually makes me very worried anxious.

What kinds of Dr's are you all seeing? If you are not seeing a mental health professional you should not take psychotropic drugs. Disorders like anxiety and depress can often bet treated with out drugs.

My previous psychiatrist perscribed celexa about a year ago. I stopped taking it a few months ago, but still had a script for it. My syptoms are the same as last time I needed it, just feeling anxious. The anxiety is caused by the welbutrin, which was perscribed by an ADD specialist.

Have you tried anything different for the ADD. I take ritilan when I remember. I have not heard any good things about wellbutrin treating ADD. I have heard good things about it being used to help people stop smoking though.

and you're totally right. I have been able to cure all of this in the past by running int he morning and going to yoga at night, eating completley organic, not having any caffine and going to church every week...but I just don't feel up to doing all of that right now...I feel soooooooooo tired.

They won't perscribe me ritalin because I had anorexia as a pre-teen and bulimia throughout high school...which sucks because now I'm like a good 30 pounds overweight so it makes NO SENSE. I do still occasionaly throw-up when I am stressed out, which is actually another reason I asked for the celexa again the doctor said ritalin wouldn't be a good choice for me. I am a freaking mess right now and I have no idea why.

What have you heard about hte wellbutrin concerning ADHD?

Anti-depressants are garbage. I don't think anyone should be taking them. I wonder what people did like 50 years ago, when there were no such things as anti-depressants. Maybe they had to learn to deal with their problems in a healthy way, instead of depending on drugs to suppress their feelings. Then again, not as many people were depressed back then because the world was a bit less chaotic and life actually had meaning to some people.

Today, so many people are on anti-depressants that they're turing up in our water supply, because this stuff never breaks down once it is excreted from the body and enters the sewer. So if you drink tap water, there is a good chance you are consuming some amount of these drugs because the so-called purification process does not completely get rid of the stuff.

But the reason doctors are so eager to prescribe these drugs is because they're nothing more than lackies for the pharmaceutical industry. All they know is what the big medical journals tell them, which are all bought and paid off by big pharma.

Actually there where anit depressants and psychotropics more than 50 years ago. Some people do need the drugs. Clinical depression is a chemical disorder and can be help with drugs. But not every person that is depressed should be taking them.

I am referring to the SSRI's that are so over-prescribed today.

    Psychotropics are not necessarily anti-depressants.

They over prescribed because instead of seeking out proper treatment most people go to their general physician to get a quick fix. you can't blame dr's for everything.

SSRI's have been around since the 1950's.
