I've had my dreads for about 11 months and I'm getting white split ends, especially at the top of my head. I just started using some leave in conditioner. Any suggestions, or anyone else have the same problem?

Hmm, any remedy for soap residue? I want to use conditioner because my hair has been breaking off when I roll it because it's so dry, and they're definitely locked enough that conditioner won't loosen them.

I don't see why not using conditioner, I use it too and my hair locks up even faster.

if you rub your hair a lot that will happen. Because of friction the ends of hair will fuse into a little white ball. this and split ends are no problem... just part of the process.

Well I think once the dreads are all locked up you could use it sometimes, but def. not when the dreads are still "maturing", abseeley

It's my feeling that your hair will fix itself in time, and those ends will grow back... Before I got my dreads, I hadnt cut my hair in 5 years... split ends would come, and they would go too.

It's just hair :) I'd be more worried about what the conditioner might do to your locks than some split ends...

Yea, throw away that conditioner. If you need to, use aloe but not too much. Maybe once a week at most.

Why only once a week? There are times I've used aloe daily to tame frizzies.

...and split ends can't be fixed, only prevented. Try some rosemary oil to strengthen the hair and prevent future breakage. Also, it helps not to blow dry and to avoid coloring your hair (if you do). Treat your hair kinda gentle if it's split-end prone. Don't tie it back when it's wet and don't fuck with it too much.

I can't believe someone else was having an issue with this. I thought I was the only one. Aloe didn't seem to help at all. Maybe I need to use it more often.

    Thanks for being helpfull![IMG]

very sorry for hijacking your thread, daisy!
i think you should forget about the conditioner. commercial conditioner doesnt do anything to mousturize, feed or heal your hair, it just coats it in residue which can be bad news for dreadies. i think the white stuff is residue and you can get it out with a simple natural soap. most people here use dr bronners. i dont know about the breakage, it sounds like your hair is just weak and brittle. try aloe and herbal rinses or oil scalp massages (rosemary is good like gaiabee said) and maybe look at your diet and eat more things that help with hair growth and health. good luck :)

Daisy the white bits you are seeing at the top of your head are not split ends, they are just the end of the hair follicle. Everyone has this, even people with really healthy hair, it's just that people like us with dreadies don't loose hair, so the hair still breaks from the scalp, but has no where to go!!! If you feel like you need to condition, Rather than using conditioner use pure coconut oil. I get mine in a solid form and then when you rub it in your palm it liquifies. Only recommend this on mature dreadies (6 months or older). It's natural and smells great! Good luck
