Hi All My hair is about 4 to 5 inches at the moment. I am going to wait until december before I even think about dreading my hair buy in your opinion, do you end up with better dreads if you start them off short or should I wait until my hair is longer. So start short and grow them long. Or, start with long hair to begin with. Cheers mamos
You could always start now. Just stop combing, wash with residue free soap and let it tangle as it starts to grow out It's all the same really, backcombing just makes them look more like dreads in the beginning and allows you to decide (relatively) what they'll look like.
Yeah I would say backcomb them in at about 6 inches if you plan on backcombing them. The longer you start them the longer they are going to take to fully lock up.
I dreaded my hair at 4 inches. The things I noticed was 2 inches of backcombed dreads falls outs no matters whats. so I had 1 inch of fuzzy roots, 1 inch of dreads and 2 inches of straight(but still 'dreadish') hair. but the good news is that in the three months I've had them the dreaded part of my hair is indeeds very dreaded. they are tight and look like what you would think dreads look like. Another thing you will notice with short backcombed hair is that for the first month (two weeks at least) you will have hellraiser like dread spikes coming straight out of your head. Mostly because the roots will be tight and the dreads not heavey enough to pull themselves down. From then on and even still a little bit now, 3 months later, when you tighten the roots (root rubbing) they will stand up. just my experiences.
