lol.. because he is only 10 months old!!! He ate all of that in blended forum... baby food... but you would catagorize it as "adult food" based on content alone.

i vote that we have this thread seperated into two different so that the original innocent thread be left out of this whole debate.

And then we can push the uneducated ones down their slippery slope. ;)

Jenna, I predict that in 10 years, you'll be an extended-breastfeeding advocate! :D

Learn to read. I said solid food, not blended.

I don't see anything wrong with breastfeeding but I think after while you need to evaluate the reasons for you doing it. Some people continue because they get comfort out of it. And I think that is wrong. It is strictly for food purposes. I am just saying there are better ways to get comfort.

Breatfeeding is not simply for food purposes. If it were strictly nutritional, the mother wouldn't get rushes of calming, mothering hormones. If it were just food, then people wouldn't drink glasses of warm cow-baby milk trying to calm themselves down before bed (why do you think that's comforting...reminds them of infanthood). If it were just food, it wouldn't protect both mommy and baby from diseases and cancers.

Breastmilk isn't just food. It's physiologically different than any other feeding process that humans partake in.

Truthfully, Jenna, how much do you actually know about breastfeeding, besides what you hear on television, or might read in a magazine? You seem to be relying on pure anecdote.

What? What mother do you know forces her kids to breast feed? The reason some people continue that long is because the CHILD finds comfort in it, even more so then the mom.

And bf is NOT just for food purposes--it enhances the maternal-child bond (it stimulates oxytocin, the bonding hormone), it calms both mother and baby, and, since it is harder to extract from a human nipple than a plastic one, it helps with a baby's jaw-muscle development, among countless other immeasurable benefits. If you ask me, pacifiers are the real evil--the child gets emotionally attached to something that you eventually HAVE to take away because it screws up their teeth. And it also gets the kid used to having something in their mouth ALL the time, which isn't a good idea.

Sorry to the OP, I know this thread has gotten way off topic. I just had to say something.

OMG! Those have got to be the cutest pictures I have seen in ages! Gotta love it when they know just what they are looking for. *big smile* Leo used to sit on his knees beside me when I would be laying down, grab hold with both hands, and kneel there doing his thing... It was so precious! Like, "Go about reading your book, I've got this under control..." :)

And my two cents based upon actually having breast fed a child... The kid will totally let you know when they are ready to stop, whether it is 10 months or 10 years... Leo decided at 11 months that he just had too much to see and do to be stuck to a boob, I gave him every chance to breastfeed, but he was done. A good friend of mine breastfed her child until he was four, when he decided he didn't need to anymore. I'd say that every mother who loves her child enough to give a large portion of her time and her body to her child would also love them enough to let them make their OWN choice... Not forcing the child to stop because "it is about time they grew up". Breastfeeding is no tip-toe through the tulips, though it is a wonderful experience... I'm sure there are very few mothers who choose to draw it out for their own sake... It's all about giving everything you have to ensure your childs happiness and health.

In our boob obsessed society people get all hung up on breastfeeding... Like to breastfeed a child old enough to understand what a breast is has got to warp them in some way, because we ALL KNOW that breasts are for SEX... [IMG] Yes, boobs are beautiful, but first and foremost they have a function... Making milk. That is what they are for! Whatever a person's personal hung-ups and misconceptions about boobs might be, if they are under-educated they need to keep their comments to themselves or be willing to learn, or else prove themselves a fool when they enter the company of people who know a lot more.

For the record, a "solids" is a term often used to mean pablum, cereal, and blended food. So, while you said "solid foods" it was about as clear as mud.

Also, would like to mention that baby teeth are often called "milk teeth" in regards to mammals in general. Being that human "milk teeth" don't usually start to fall out until a child is about 5-8 years of age. Mammals usually nurse their young in the animal kingdom until these milk teeth start to fall out....

I love those pictures!! They are so sweet!

As for those trying to ruin this beautiful thread, until you are a mother, you have no way to know how you will feel or what it is like. I'm so sick of know-it-all 19 year olds with no children thinking they know how I should raise my kids. Yeah, I was a perfect parent too, until I had kids LOL.

I read somewhere that I think chimpanzees (not too sure now though) breastfeed their young for up to 5 years. Quite interesting if you look at how much genes we have in common with them, is it not?

Excuse you. Having some kid attached to your tit until they are 4 years old is gross. I don't care what anyone says. It is not normal and you probably have problems with your sexual feelings.

As tempting as it is to jump into the forray I will just say this:

I am a young mom who never considered breastfeeding as a teenager . Once you have a child your perspective changes completely. Lots of people tell us that (to the point of annoyance when your pregnant with your first), but you cant really understand that change until you experience it. A mother wants to do whats best for her children. For me, that includes breastfeeding.

Breastmilk is the VERY BEST thing for your child to consume, and it's free, and the act of breastfeeding is very rewarding physiologically for both mother and child. When you breastfeed your child becomes the farthest thing from gross, regardless of what other people think of it.

I will never refuse to feed my son, he will wean himself. I also plan to continue to pump after he has weaned and give him the breastmilk where many people would normally give their child cow's milk. It's so much more beneficial and it costs nothing. I could never consider it gross, to me the stuff it is liquid gold.

A 4 year old that breastfeeds doesn't do it for every meal. Maybe before school or before bed, or something like that. Certainly no mother forces her breast into the kids mouth. It is not something a mother does for herself, it is something she does for her child. Why give a child milk from another animal when he can have the milk that is tailor-made for his body?

Yup. :applause: I'm not a parent...yet (*crossing fingers that soon this won't be the case*:) ) but I love "haunting" this forum, and occasionally responding. Why? Because I think it's interesting and informative. I can't tell you how many issues I had never even thought of before this forum, breastfeeding being one of them. I guess I had always just thought, in the back of my mind, you have a baby and feed them formula. Thank goodness there are so many BF-ing mamas on here. They got me thinking about it, and then researching it, and now I really believe that it's the best way to go. Hopefull nature (and patience! LOL) will allow me to breastfeed my kids as long as they want to.
Breastfeeding is beautiful. If you look at a mother FEEDING HER CHILD and find something disgusting or sexual about it, I would say the perversion lies in you, not someone doing what is best for their child.

Well I'm a parent but not 19. My kid is 5. I couldn't even imagine a baby sucking on a nipple of mine let alone a kid that should be well into solid foods. I agree with Jenna. But to each their own. I'm not trying to badmouth any of you btw.

You couldn't imagine breast feeding your baby? Sorry, but I think there's something terribly wrong with you if you find breast feeding your own child disgusting.
I found it the most amazing experience to be able to feed my daughter like this, it's a miracle really, that the mother is all that a baby needs to stay alive for many months. And I agree with a previous poster that it would seem silly to give my child cow's milk, when it can just as well have breast milk from his own mother! Which animal drinks another animals milk?

And Jenna: Wait till you have a child of your own, because I really think you have no clue what you are talking about.
