this thread isn't meant to offend anyone.

i honestly believe that cigarettes should be illegal!!! i'm lucky where i live because it's illegal to smoke in any publich building, i know that that's alot further ahead then most places. my beef is that no everyone smokes on the sidewalks, and it's impossible for me to walk in town without getting sick (i'm very sensative to the smoke). i can't even get away from it at school!!!! they all stand right infront of the doors and when i talked to the principal, she told me to walk around to the back of the school!!!! why should i have to walk all the way around the school to get in!!! they shouldn't even be smoking on school property!! it's illegal and I'M TOLD TO GO AROUND THEM!!!!
if i have any problems this semester i am leaning in a big way to call the school board and if necessary, the police.

weed should stay illegal too i guess
if people would just be considerate of other people when they smoke, we wouldnt have to deal with it, but some people are ignorant about it. people need to start thinking about others.

Thats bullshit...people should have the right to smoke if they want to, restricting where they can is enough.

the last thing i want to see is the governments further infringements on peoples personal choice.

Amen to that! I don't think substances of any kind should be illegal, as it limits personal choice, and it does more damage that way than it does good. People who need help fear the law and going to jail, so they suffer in their addiction. Since black market prices are always unreasonably high, and people have trouble paying for their addiction, so they turn to crime. Nicotine is about as addictive as heroin. Do you want people robbing stores, homes, etc to pay for the cigarette fix? Hell no!

Prohibition is a "cure" that is worse than the "disease" it tries to solve. Prohibiton should be made illegal.

By the way, no I don't smoke tobacco, and never will.

I honestly doubt you are that sensitive to smoke. If you can't walk on the street without freaking out over cigarette smoke, what does car exhaust do to you?

you doubt it?! well guess what, I AM!!! i missed a semester of highschool cuz i was in and out of the hospital, they thought i had meningitis, but nope!!! turns out it was an allergic reaction to the smoke!!!
car exhaust.... i don't know what its like where you live, what kind of cars people drive or where you walk when your downtown, but i don't ever remember getting a big puff of car exhaust blown in my face, i've never had to walk through a big cloud of exhaust that's just hanging in the air where i have to walk.

i know that its addictive, i'm not stupid. the tobacco company is one of if not the richest industry in the world!!! did you know that their target consumers are 9 year old girls? you know why? cuz the earlier they are hooked the more money they will spend through out their life on the stupid shit. did you know that they used to pay hollywood to get their cigarettes in the movies? oh, i saw so and so smoking in this great movie, wow it looked so sexy!!! that's why many teens start smoking! cuz they saw how good i looked on a movie.

have you ever heard of Barb Tarbox? she smoked for thirty years, died of cancer when she was 41!!! left behind her husband and little girl. when she found out she had cancer she went around do schools and auditoriums speaking about it, showing what it does.
"Why did I do this? Why did I smoke? Because (in junior high) I wanted to be in the in-crowd. They were all so popular. But my limbs are going cold and my knuckles are turning black because the tissues in my body are dying. So how cool is it, guys?" - Barb Tarbox
"There is a massive machine above you and there are two volts of direct radiation. You lie on the table. You are placed down and there are rims (for your mask) and they are locked into place. The radiation begins. Never in my life have I ever smelled anything like my brain burning. Does it hurt? Yes. Let me tell you what the cigarette does to you? It burns you! Radiation FRIES your brain! It puts a hole in your brain."- Barb Tarbox
    http://bookscollective.com/barbs_site/barbsays.html

there was another lady that did the same thing as Barb, except for one thing, she never touched a cigarette in her life!!! no she was a waitress that got terminal cancer from second hand smoke. How would you like to go home and tell your little girl or your little boy that even though you made the right choice, someone else didn't and now it is certain that you are going to die a slow and painful death.
i know that not everyone that smokes dies, but cigarettes do not just affect the person sucking them. and i do think they should be illegal despite what you said about people needing to get their fix, there is help for people that are addicted to illegal drugs, why would it be any different for cigarettes?
i'm not picking on smokers, they are not bad people. I'm pissed off at the tobacco companies for treating us like we are stupid!!!! they tell us that we will be cool if we smoke, they tell us that cigarettes are our friends, when you are stresed and need help just light up, you'll feel soo much better. they take our money and put the people we love in an early grave.

Here's what people say about Barb Tarbox:
    • "It’s been one year, two months, three days, seven hours, fifty minutes, five seconds since I quit smoking," says retail supervisor Kelly Jones, 37, of Leduc, Alberta, who monitors her progess with a computer program. "I have not smoked 10,708 cigarettes thanks to Barb. I have saved more than $4,000, and that’s times two, because my husband quit as well."
i know this picture is disturbing, but this is the reality, the only reason she got cancer and ended up like this is cigarettes, yes they were her choice, but what about her 11 year old daughter? what about her husband of 20 years, do you think it was fair that her decision to be 'cool' made them go through the pain of watching her go through this?

Its up to the individual whether they want to take the risks or not....end of story...a person could be allergic to almost anything, that is not reasoning for making anything illegal.

A person could die from eating too much fatty food, does the government ban McDonalds, or force them to stop making ho-hos...no..its up to the individual to control what they eat, and their own health is their own responsibilty, not some government agencies.

As far as the second hand smoke thing goes, you answered your own question....smoking is banned in public places.

Toughen up...the government isn't supposed to act like your little teddy bear, or your mommy to go cry to, just walk around the smoke and stop whining....like you did about boohoo, non Christians are celebrating Christmas.

did you even read my post? i said that it is the persons choice, several times infact. if i was the only person that was allergic to it, no problem, but how many people have been affected by cigarettes? how many have died from cigarette realated cancer, how many people have lost someone they love with their whole heart, just cuz of cigarettes?!! even one is too many.

yes, i'm really happy that where i live it's banned in public BUILDINGS not places, but that's my city and a few others, not everyone is lucky enough to be able to get away from it. i know that most 'smokers' don't realize how much it bothers non-smokers, but it does, i know i'm not the only one. i also know that most of them don't realize how rude it is to blow big puffs of smoke right infront of someones face when they are passing you on the street. my theory.... i don't fart in your face, so you don't blow smoke in mine!

i know that i'm not the first person that wants the government to do something. seems to me people have been trying to get the government to do things for years, like the prohibition, gay marriages, pot, education, hospitals. are you gonna go tell someone that wants more doctors to just not get sick, cuz the government is not there for them?

and as far as the whole christmas thing. try to stick to one topic, if you have something to say then figure out how to go to the right post.

I read in your post where you want the government to make smoking illegal...how is that leaving it up to personal choice?

and right here is where you said it "i honestly believe that cigarettes should be illegal!!!"

I'm not just upset cuz i'm sensitive to it, i'm pissed cuz it kills people, it destroys countless lives!!!!

and in many places people are not allowed to wear perfume, like in most of bc, there are signs that say no perfume or scented lotions etc... cuz people are allergic to it. you can take an allergy pill if someone cuts their lawn. it's not like that for cancer.

this is not something against you guys, i am very passionate about a few things and this happens to be one of them. no, i don't want to live in a totalitarian society, i'd like to live in a healthy one.

I know that people get and die from diseases!!! but the numbers are way more then they should be, people are making the choice to risk cancer when they smoke, they are putting the people around them at risk. you didn't do anything, how would you like it if you found out that you got it from someone else making a choice they knew could end up in you getting cancer? I'd be pissed if it was me, they know that by doing it they could get themeselves sick or me sick, and they did it anyways cuz they wanted to look cool and now i'm fighting a life threatening disease while they are still going on doing whatever they were doing.

you'd have to breath A LOT of secondhand smoke to get cancer...from what i've read it hasn't been conclusively proven that it does cause Cancer....anyway its up to you, they've already banned smoking in public places..so just go away from peoples homes if they are smoking, who are you to tell them what they can or cannot do in their own homes?

Just move away from them, then leave them alone.

People die because others make the choice to get drunk and drive. Sure they go to jail but the damage is done, It's called life!

yes, i know that you'd have to breath alot, but how much is alot? breathing it every morning and afternoon when i'm going to and from school (btw, they smoke in front of every door at my school)? breathing it when i have to go to the grocery store? the bank? how about when it comes in my window from the neighbors place? maybe i should just get a tent and live in the forest since according to you i can't go to school, shopping, the bank or even stay in my own house.

i can stay away from it alot more then alot of people, i don't go downtown alot cuz of the smoke, i hold my breath when i'm going to through them at school etc.... but what about the kids that have parents smoking inside, in the car with the windows up (doesn't really matter cuz it still clings to everything in the car) how about the foster kids that are put in homes where the foster parents smoke?!

this isn't just about me... it's a huge deal that affects many many people

its illegal, that stops alot of people from doing it, that means that many lives have been saved. and the people that it doesn't stop, there are things being done to prevent it, like that machine in the car, police checks on the roads. are you guys gonna complain that their rights and personal choices are being taken away to?
