I haven't heard too much of The Smiths yet, although I did hear an album of theirs, Louder than Bombs, from a friend of mine, and I really enjoyed what I heard of them. Are there any fans of this band in here? I think that they have an incredibly different, unique sound, yet it is very accessible at the same time. I can't think of any other bands that sound quite like them.

All of the members of the band are great musicians and all are essential to the overall sound of the group. Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce make a very good rhythm section, with tight, propulsive drumming and melodic basslines. They always provide a good base for the group. Johnny Marr is an amazing guitarist, and is probably my favorite musician in the group. The melodies that he came up with could be incredibly diverse in style, and there is such friction between his guitar playing and Morrissey's vocal tones and delivery. With songs like 'This Charming Man' and 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now', Morrissey and Johnny Marr are so differing in what they do, yet their melodies clash against one another in unconventional and often beautiful ways. I find Morrissey's voice to be irritating sometimes, but for the most part, I love it. He often has strange lyrics in his songs too, some of which dealing with dark, disturbing subject matter not normally covered within the context of a rock song.

Some of my favorite songs of theirs would be 'Shoplifters of the World Unite', 'This Charming Man', 'William, It Was Really Nothing', 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now', and 'Panic'.

They are one of my favorite bands of all time, you are right about them all being talented and combining in unique ways. they have such sensitive songs, but when you focus on the drums and bass they are very driving. Agreed about johnny Marr, too bad he hasn't done much since.

I like Louder than Bombs best too.

I agree that Morrissey is full of himself as a person, but does that affect the music at all? If you don't like the music out of personal preference that's fine, but to base that off of Morrissey's personality is kind of ridiculous. Morrissey seems like such a strange, arrogant, eccentric person in real life - I couldn't agree with you more on that subject.

    Great band -- very talented

I'll agree that Morrissey is a little self-centered, but I really like his voice. It really fits the kind of music he does.

Check out some of Morrissey's solo stuff, too. No Johnny Marr, but still good.

Morrissey isn't self centered, or arrogant. He's just extremely intelligent.
The Smiths are my favourite band.

No I hate the music as well. I am not a fan of 80's music, mostly British 80's music.

I get it I just don't like it.
Just like I don't like people like British musicians like Eric Clapton trying to play blues. Leave the real music to the Americans!!!!!

I dont like his persona but I love Morrisey's music, the smiths stuff was the best because he had Jonny Marr backing him up.

Disagree with this, The Smiths have a huge following in the States, just as Morrissey has now. He still holds the record for selling out Madison Square Gardens.

But yeah, love The Smiths, initially because of Morrisseys lyrics:-

"And If A Double Decker bus, crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die"

"Theres a club if you'd like to go, you could meet somebody who really loves you, so you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home and you cry and you want to die"

Who else could get away with that?

But in recent years it been Johnny Marr who has kept me with them, he really is a god, and I think Morrissey's solo stuff has been pretty bland in comparison. His lyrics are still funny, and clever - maybe a little less subtle than they used to be, but his band now are dull, and uninventive.
Just compare the music for say "You're The One For Me Fatty" with say "Some Girls Are Bigger than Others" - its like chalk and cheese. He should have stuck with Mark Nevin (Kill Uncle era), at least the music there was semi interesting.

They are also dreadful live, whereas The Smiths were usually awesome, unless Andy Rourke was caned out of his face.

The latest album isn't bad though, definately the best since Vauxhall And I

that is so lame, now we're going to get patriotic about music, get a fucking clue, there have been TONS of great British bands, far more than I see coming out of New England....

plenty of good musicians come across as arrogant, it helps them put on a good show.

Real Music to the Americans eh?

Where did Jimi Hendrix have to come to make his name?

Where did the Beatles come from?

Led Zeppelin? The Who? Pink Floyd?

What about cracking blues musicians like Jeff Beck?

Americans are best at music in the same way they are at world peace.

I could have done without the politics....and your mention of Jeff Beck...but i don't blame you for having a reactionary opinion to that drivel.it hilarious when people have to resort to pride in their country.

AND she claims to be Goth...where did siouxsie and the banshees come from, where did Bauhaus come from, where did the Cure come from, where did the birthday Party move to get bigger.....if you took away Britain and Germany there would be very little Goth.

Hey Jeff is ace! Just ask Seymour Duncan! ;) (and lenny henry!!)

You're right, that was a weak political point, but there are too many americans who believe they are the best at everything, and i need to point out that they are quite clearly not as often as possible!
