a few years ago i was watching extreeme homes on hgtv, and they featured a totallt self reliant home built out of recycled materials called the earthship. they even look kinda cool and futuristic. you can check them out at http://www.earthship.org/. one day i hope to build one or something like it, in fact, if more people did... well never mind, just dreaming out loud.
