I do think there is a lot of Anti-American sentiment in the world, however, it doesn't have to do much with the American people directly rather it has to do with it's government and foreign policies.
Generally I think the risk of a powerful force rising cough*American Government*, perhaps bored with their limited grasp of just one country, and using the globalization pitch to extend their reach over the entire world, and that my friends is not a world I want to live in. ANARCHY!!!!!
The huge problem with "globalization," is that it seems to be too much about, not uniting the people with more freedom and opportunities, but rather more about uniting and merging greedy corporations and wicked governments, to oppress the people more "efficiently" and consistantly. I would be very much in favor of "globalization" if it was merely the natural result of expanding human populations growing together for the greater good of the many. While a very vague word, "globalization" seems to be some sort of "globalist" power-monger conspiracy.
I have been a strong opponent of globalization based on my observations and experiences, but after a recent conversation with a close personal friend, I realize I need to re-think this. Mind you, I work in the high tech industry, and as such have felt the brunt of it first hand, now that I've seen mine and many of my co-workers' jobs disappear, as the US-based corporations we work for hand over our high tech jobs to India and China, where they can get workers for half what they pay us. Note that my friend works in the construction industry, and is thus less affected by this phenomenon. His argument is that, in the long run, we will enjoy a broader base of goods and services, as the playing field will eventually become level, and the whole world will realize an improvement in standard of living (we in the US may not, but that's because we're imperialist pigs who could use a little dose of reality). It is at that point that we will enjoy a sort of utopian globalized economy, as the cost of living in places like China and India increases, while ours declines. The problem is in the short term, and that's what we're experiencing now. Corporations are driven by short term quarterly gains, which don't jibe with socially responsible behavior, so it's important to have international laws in place to govern their behavior world wide. Mechanisms like international labor laws for protecting foreign workers from exploitation need to be put in place. When a corporation moves into a foreign community, they should be forced to support the infrastructure in the form of taxes. Large scale changes such as these are dangerous to the economy, so they would need to be introduced slowly.
But aren't too many giant, unaccountable, greedy corporations, promoting a corrupt form of "globalization" seeking to meld the world into a vast surplus labor pool, so that they can reduce wages and reduce workers rights and benefits? Yeah, a vast globalist pool of resources and higher standards sounds good, but too many power-monger leaders, seem to have some other agenda than the betterment of mankind. Thus, their globalist "utopia" isn't working so well, and has a sinister side to it.
True, and this is what I'm opposed to and cynical about, but the point is it could be a good thing if regulated properly. Of course, it would be naive to assume that this is possible without some problems along the way, given the greed and corruption within most governments, but it's important to accept the idea with an open mind. It's possible it could lead to a somewhat better standard of living world wide, thus eliminating the resentment other cultures have toward us. Only time will tell, since it seems inevitable at this point...
Globalists hate regulation they paint it as the big bugaboo. Only totally free trade for them. The problem is they never consider the good of the society, only their bottom line. Hence the crap that World Com, and Enron wreaked on the world...and it was a valuable lesson, one I hope we all learned.
real humans dying by having been robbed of their only means of survival is the very short, and i think adiquite answer to what is wrong with a global dictatorship of corporate tyranny. there are other uses of the word globalization there is nothing wrong with at all. but i don't see all loss of cultural diveresity as inheirently good either. =^^= .../\...
the reason globalization can never be good, and this is a point that many people miss, is that it is not globalization, that word has no meaning it doenst exist. Capitalism since its inception has been global, it is a global system it does not work on a country by country basis. A more accurate term for globalization is Late Neo-Liberal Capitalism. where capitalism is the exploitation of cheap labor for profit (hence why the term free trade means nothing because capitalism makes all its profit not on trade but on the difference between production and what the employee is paid.) "Globalization" is the exploitation of an entire countries production abilities for profit, another reason why the vast majority of industrial workers of the world today are women. As maria mies says in her theory about housewification corporations use the fact that women are supposedly second tier workers, their husbands being bread winners, against them so they are paid less. while the company b/c they are the only employeer near their village know very well that the husbands are not employeed. http://thetroubledtimes.blogspot.com Troubled Times
I'm sorry, being the lazy person I am, I didn't read all 5 pages of comments but I do want to comment on globalization. Globalization will be a good thing if it is allowed to happen the right way. Regulations need to be in affect to protect the poor. The way it stands now, our jobs are being shipped overseas to 3rd world countries who use child labor the pennies a day. First world countries can't compete with that.
it's be nice to protect the environment worldwide. Dirty factories travel to the less developed world to escape all the regulation. The regulatory diference may out weigh the wage diference.
jobs arent being "shipped over seas" corporations under the guidance of the WTO are taking them there to make a greater profit. there is no competition between first and third world countries. The corporations of the first world are just exploiting third world peoples and resources. please check out my blog at: thetroubledtimes.blogspot.com globalization is vastly misunderstood i hope this can shed some light and help you to begin your search even farther
What is wrong with globalization. Personally I think nothing is wrong with it. I just don't think that in the worlds current state it would work man. I mean we'd all have to be able to get along an' the Jews an' Arabs, (not to mention the blacks an' the whites) would have a hard time of it. If we could get rid of the religious, racist, an' political stuff in the world we could make globalization work, but not till then. Peace, love, an' freedom man. "Imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try. No hell below us, above us only sky Imagine all the people livin' for today. You may say I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us An' the world will live as one." John Lennon (Imagine)
Looking back to when existance of humans was first expanding. Look through the eyes of a human 2,000 years ago. They see the land they are living on. They know they have life! They see the beautiful sky. They are living in tribes/groups/commune's whatever you want to call it. It's their family! And instead of living as a community fending for survival, we are overun with billions of people in a world controled by greed!! Beautiful scenery being destroyed by so called "progress", trees destroyed, land and water being polluted, inferior products being made from our natural resources and a power struggle for a material (oil) to power machines to make our "society" thrive faster?? Is it worth all the killing?!?!?!?!?! Globalization is HORRIBLE!!! It is NOT supposed to be this way!! IMO ~PeAcE~
Globalization is destroying us...........culling the worlds population by 80-90% is not my idea of something positive. Really to be honest I feel theirs alot of ignorant feel good comments in this thread by people that have no clue what they are suggesting. Before you form a solid opinion of globalization, I suggest you read the United Nations Agenda 21........I won't bother explaining whats in it, you wouldn't believe me anyway so read it for yourself.
But think of all the people of the world who can benefit from globalization, now that they have the opportunity to share in our consumerism. Ahhh, I can see the trees getting cut down, and the toxic waste dumps being filled as I speak...
