I first became aware of Acomplia (rimonabant) as an experimental drug a couple of years ago. I was intrigued because it was reported to block the same receptors responsible for the "marijuana munchies".

Of course you might wonder "If it blocks the munchies receptor, what about the "getting high" receptor? I'm here to report that this is not a problem.:)

Acomplia is supplied as 10 or 20 mg tablets. 20mg / day in the AM on an empty stomach is the recommended dose. 20mg is probably too high as a starting dose. Much more at http://www.medicationsense.com/ about Pharma and unsafe recommended doses.

Not for me. I break the 20's in half creating two tens. I break them in half to create four 5 mg fragments (give or take) I read about a study that showed 5mg as better than placebo but less effective than 20. My first dose was a 20 and I didn't care for the headache when I woke up the next morning. This lowers my cost from 7 bucks/dose to a buck seventy five. As the FDA will likely not approve it anytime soon I had to go the overseas (UK) online route to get it $$$$$$.

Oh, and it should also raise your HDL and lower your triglycerides similar to Niacin but without the flush.

I don't believe it makes sense to take the dose in the AM, though (unless you're a complete stoner). The peak level is achieved about two hours after a fasting dose. I try to time the peak levels as close to the 'munchie danger zone' as possible. it does seem to build a dam around the inevitable flood of glutony. At least so far....

Maybe but here's the pharmacodynamic properties from the package insert

"Rimonabant is a selective cannabinoid-1 receptor (CB1) antagonist that inhibits the pharmacological effects of cannabinoid agonists in vitro and in vivo.

The endocannabinoid system is a physiological system present in brain and peripheral tissues (including adipocytes) that affects energy balance, glucose and lipid metabolism and body weight, and in neurons of the mesolimbic system modulates the intake of highly palatable, sweet or fatty foods."

Probably not just 'in your head'...

"An independent U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory committee determined ... that the controversial 'anti-pot' pill Rimonabant [Acomplia] is unsafe for human consumption in the United States. Sanofi-Aventis' would-be diet aid -- which has been linked to suicidal thoughts, depression and even multiple sclerosis -- counteracts the effects of marijuana and similar naturally occurring chemicals in the body (so-called endocannabinoids), causing users to lose their appetites and, according to the warnings of experts, a host of other unwanted and dangerous side effects."

the "munchies" are not stereotypical... one of the reasons marijuana is given to cancer patients is because marijuana increases appitite that is usually lost during chemotheropy because of the patients feeling nauzeated all the time
