Another nail in the coffin against Freedom of Speech. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that schools can bar pro-drug banners and speech. A student from a high school in Juneau, Alaska had unfurled a banner at the 2002 Olympic Torch parade that read "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" and was suspended for 10 days for this. He sued under First Amendment rights and was backed by the ACLU, but lost in the Supreme Court, which ruled that schools (and the gov't will now have a green light as well) can ban speech that advocates illegal drug usage or drug legalization. I highly disagree with this ruling because it is NOT illegal to advocate violating or changing the law so long as violence is not encouraged or used to achieve that end. If his banner had encouraged cop killing, I'd understand, because that is advocating violence in order to break the law, but he was just being sarcastic and facetious with his banner.

that's complete bullshit, they're going directly against the whole right to freedom of speech
i say people across the nation should challenge it individually and then depending on the circumstances challenge it with a nationwide group

Yeah, but we've actually never really had "freedom of speech" in this country.

There are tons of limitations on that, and your right, it is bullshit.

lets have a hip forums get together solely for the bong hits 4 jesus movement, we should do it in a major city, and maybe do it while this story still has attention on it, think about it , if this one kid made such an impact, imagine what a whole group could do

set up a booth in the parking lot of a sports event (NHL, NFL, MLB, etc) and have it say Bong Hits 4 Jesus and get people to sign up

If they are already marijuana losers; what difference does it make if they are now portrayed as more then just marijuana losers? Whats lower then a marijuana loser?

While "Bong hits for Jesus" may not be the best selection for a slogan; it does make people talk about the person with the banner, and perhaps even the message on the banner.

this really isn't surprising at all. it has already been determined that schools can operate outside of the constitution. in the landmark supreme court case TLO vs New Jersey a girl had been brought to the principals office under allegations of smoking in the bathroom (cigarettes). after saying no to a search of her purse, the girl was searched anyway (a violation of 4th amendment rights) and she was found with weed, papers, and list a of people she was selling too. the case went to the supreme court and was ruled in favor of new jersey. schools are allowed to operate outside the constitution.
