I'm getting one done next tuesday.

Has anyone here had one done? If so, what does it entail and what's it like?
I was briefly explained that they will stick a scope inside my rectal area and snake up the intestines or what not. That's all.
    Anyone??

I had one about two years ago. The worst part is the concoction you have to drink beforehand. All I remember is going to sleep and waking up.

oh you see im not going to sleep for this, they're not giving me any numbing medicine. they're just gonna put the scope up inside me. i'll be wide awake for it and ill feel everything they are doing. the dr wasnt real reassuring. he said "the worst that will happen is you will tear where we put the scope" geee is that all?
i guess they're gonna look for polups and colon cancer.

The previous post was right, probably the worst part is the wash-out drugs they give you beforehand. :p

What a jerk of a doctor. Yeah stuff CAN happen, but sigmoidoscopies are pretty routine, and there's not much risk associated with it. It shouldn't be painful -- it's possible that it can be painful if you already have some sort of colon disease that would make it sensitive and irritated, but just looking for polyps and stuff in an otherwise healthy colon, it should not be painful.
Also, they should be relatively sensitive to comfort -- if it's a particularly upsetting or uncomfortable experience, you should be able to get some sort of mild sedation.

But you shouldn't expect anything painful.
