I went into town this morning to see if I could get some info on any roadblocks, cops, etc but I didn't run into any family that had come from the gathering. So all I know is kinda old news which I already posted. Just that the cops are searching vehicles and doing so thoroughly. I'll try going into town in the afternoon tomorrow. As to the numbers of people here, last year I made it into Steamboat on Sunday before the 4th and I can say that I have regularly seen more family in town here than I did in Steamboat that day. There is not an increased police presence in Clarksville atm. I did hear that dumpster diving is not cool with the police here for some reason. I have not been to the site yet so thats all I can provide. Hopefully I'll have more info later.
dumpster diving is illegal? wtf? obvisously the previous owners of the stuff in the dumpsters don't want it anymore. geez, some people never seize to amaze me!
Dumpster diving is illegal in alot of places, it is that they dont enforce it. my family and i have been chased out of alot of dumpsters, we just go back later.
You are new here, aren't you? If you think he's tactless, you really shouldn't even think about going to Tea Time, or the Lovin'Ovens...Probably the oldest two continuously functioning Rainbow camps.
Yeah, that was just after the Gathering in what town? It made international news...got so many hits it crashed the Steamboat paper's server, if I' remember right. Convictions were overturned, I think, but after the kids had already done jome jail time. Diode, perhaps the local Chamber of Commerce or somebody might could be reminded that the Whole World really is watching, and while they may want the local constabulary to keep everything looking all Pleasantville for the tourists and their $$, a hue and cry in the Press about how rural Arkansas cops really are as bad as the tourist's worst fears won't help to bring 'em in.
Well as far as Clarksville goes they will give anybody trouble that looks outta tha ordinary:troll: .. its a college town and they say they have an image to uphold  ... SE was right when he said that tha gatherings should be held n places that need it tha most and well, i think tha south needs some good ole hippie luvin :grouphug:
Well I passed through town today and saw several groups of folks. I didn't stop to talk because they were already chatting with cops. It looks like they were being ticket for spanging. Ordinarily that would not draw the attention of the cops here so they are just trying to make trouble.
only other thing i can add to diode's is that a group went swimming at a local park...horsehead recreation area, and went sans clothes...(*nude).. caused a bit of trouble with the locals morals...lol.. and i have a question for the local side of the family about the gathering, i have quite a bit of produce, squash, zuchinni, peppers and cucumbers. i have a decent size garden..if i want to share them.. do i just take em up there?..and if so..who do i give em too so that they will be best put to use?
I live in Fallsville, welcome Rainbows (can you leave your imported L.E.O.s at home next time?) The Rainbows I talked to at the gathering didn't think the law situation was unusual. Just don't do anything stupid, watch your speed and have your paperwork handy for the road block. There are dogs at the road block. There are USFS, Newton & Johnson county and State police monitoring the speed limits on the hiway. Watch out for gut trucks (they are immune to speed cops) DO NOT go through Jasper if you can avoid it!!!!!!! 22nd- 24th is Elk Festival if you are coming from the North use hiway 43 from Harrison down to 21 AVOID the tourists. Other than that come prepared for MUD it has rained about 3" in the last 2 days
BeCool, Bro, you can either take the veggies to main supply or you can take them to the kitchen of your choice, it's up to you. Either way, fresh homegrown veggies are aways a blessing! Karst, you have a wonderful sense of humor! we would love to leave the imported leos at home but those folks just keep following us hippies around...used to think it was the food but they rarely eat our hippie grub, guess they just must like soakin up the vibe Thank you so much for the updates wonderful local Family!
11becool69, the way it works it this. You will first find the general parking sprawl. A ways form this area you you will encounter the main trail head. From this point your food can be transported (perhaps some miles) by dolly, arms, etc to a kitchen. You might want to find a kitchen and volunteers to help you move the food in advance. There are many kitchens so just pick one that you fancy (there are krishna, baha`i, christian, entertainment oriented, you name it, etc) if you don't want to give to the main supply. Depending on the traffic and quantity you may want to have one of the taxis transport you, your food, and volunteers to the trail head from the parking sprawl or beyond. Last year general vehicular traffic was not encouraged from the sprawl to the trail head unless you were transporting food or taxing. Things may very well be different here atm, but thats what I experienced last year when I helped transporting food. If you need further info then I'm sure someone here can answer your questions.
thanks hippiestead and diode, i appreciate the information.. im going to pick stuff for the next two days and bring it up saturday. trying to work a deal with my uncle who has some laying houses for a couple of cases of fresh eggs too... i was at wal mart about an hour ago and met a really nice couple too.. cant wait to chat with them again as well
Tell your uncle with the chicken houses he'll have a great source of English speaking day labor there for a while. There's not much a hippie that's been out in the woods for a couple weeks won't do for enough cash to get a motel room and a tank of gas. And if you're spending any time on site, you'll be able to tell the good workers from the blissninnys and drainbows. An afterthought--Hippiestead, since you're doing such a wonderful job as Our Ottaviano, could you perhaps invite that cherrish from AGR over here to this thread? S/he sounds like a local with some good information.
This is posted on a local bloggers site at http://jeremiasx.wordpress.com/ Rainbow Gathering 2007: Further Commentary June 28th, 2007 at 4:18 pm So what do you get when you gather a couple thousand people in the forest for the promotion of world peace? A pretty good time so far, that’s the word from the “regs” attending the “national” gathering of the Rainbow Family of Love and Light. Other than the usual delays in getting set up for the event which have largely come in the form of undue police harassment and inclement weather, things seem to be going pretty good down there. In my time at the gathering I didn’t witness anything negative happening at all, as a matter of fact. I would have liked to have seen more tarps up by the time a torrential downpour sent my family scrambling for cover to “Kiddie Village.” We DID find shelter and fire and plenty of friendly folks, though. Nice people, indeed. I suppose it vexes the imaginations of those who sit in a nine-to-five routine to try to comprehend the lifestyle that most of these people lead. Many of them have no permanent residence, they don’t participate in the credit culture (system), and they don’t aspire to be the world’s next millionaire. Some might label that as giving up but sometimes I wonder if it’s not good plain sense. We certainly seem to live in a world gone mad. Why not just drop it all and head for the hills? LOL Rainbow Family members come from all walks of life and various socio-economic backgrounds, but the one thing I’ve found that they all have is a consensus that peace, not war, is the way to human evolution (seems to make sense, we can’t very well evolve if we’re all dead) and that there is another way of living this time we’ve been given on Earth which I have found to be quite fascinating. The regs don’t really deal with money that much. They mainly barter, just like in the “good ole days.” But like any person who actually had to haul cartons of eggs down to the general store to get dry goods will tell you, it’s really not all it’s cracked up to be if your main concern is CONVENIENCE. I feel that most folks in this country are obsessed by the concept of convenience, so bartering doesn’t work for most people. It’s just easier all the way around to throw out stuff you bought and don’t like in a yard sale and take the old credit card up to the Wal-Mart and buy new schtuff. Fabulous. Have there been reports of malfeasance on the part of individuals who have come to the gathering? Sure…about 198 of them (violations), according to the last figures I saw. Are these offenses “serious” or not? I suppose if you think it’s worth the taxpayers money to house hundreds of extra law enforcement officers at a Best Western (roughly 40 miles from the gathering, at the SUV rate of fuel consumption that works out to about twenty bucks a day per vehicle, just for SHUTTLING the LEO’s out there…) to issue a couple hundred tickets for minor drug charges, unlawful parking, on a forest road, and using park services without a permit…do you see what I’m getting at here? Do we really need to have the Forest Service spending what will certainly be tens of thousands of dollars to prevent these terrible “crimes?” Is that reasonable, or logical in any way? Need I remind you that while they were busy covering this Rainbow event that a campground host at the Buffalo National Forest DIED AND WAS NOT FOUND (IN HIS RV, AT THE CAMPSITE) FOR A WEEK by park officials who were too busy checking if people had “all four wheels fully off the forest service road when they parked.” I haven’t seen this story in the MSM yet. Maybe someone will talk about it. There have been limited (extremely limited) reports of theft from local businesses, but I’m going to wager they will make their money back and more from the money being pumped in from all sides of this issue. The LEO’s need gas and supplies. So do the Rainbows. Money is being made here in the county…bottom line. Keep in mind, that besides the tourism and forestry industry there is virtually no other “industry” here at all. I’m surprised we didn’t put up a welcome sign at the front gates for these folks. We need their money to boost our economy, undoubtedly. The Rainbow Family still thrives after nearly 40 years of protest, and hearkens back to the anti-war and counterculture movement of the 60s, of which it is the natural progression…many of you remember those glory days. I don’t. My mother was a hippie, though, and she spoke consistently throughout her life on behalf of the ideals of world peace and brotherly love throughout her life. I say that she was a Rainbow at heart. Perhaps I am as well?
