Hi guys/girls. I just wanted to introduce myself since Im new here. Im Josh A.K.A DJ M@ch!n3. I just got done with a 3 day battle of locking my hair. So far they look good. I skimmed over a few threads on The use of wax and how locks will eventually lock themselfs up. My question is this.....After I got done backcombing each lock, I threw some wax on, because thats what DHHQ told me to do. I know its bad to have the wax there and I want to get it out as soon as possible. I saw something about the use of aloe as a substitute for wax. So here are my questions:

    1. At this point, about 3 days, after locking up my hair, would washing it remove at lease SOME of the wax? (using a residue-free soap of course)

    2. Whats with the Aloe idea?

    3. My head itches, what can I do about that if I cant wash the locks?

Well it's not that aloe is a substitute, it just helps to calm the frizzies down a little bit. you'll certainly get frizzies. Wax on the other hand gives you candlesticks.

    1. lots of hot hot water.. I dunno about three days though, someone else might wanna give their say on that one
    2. It's fantastic and..
    3. Aloe will help treat the itchies if you rub a light amount onto your scalp
Make sure it's 100% aloe gel, or close to it

yeah, what Slang said! But I'd wait a couple of weeks before washing, just to let them settle a bit.

We need a big pop-up or something... so as soon as people sign in or come to the knotty know how forums, it screams at them not to use wax.. Been quite a few wax topics over the past week or two!

Maybe if we just exagerate it's negative effects? "Dread wax killed my mother! And raped my father!"

Wax left me homeless, I was addicted... I'd be on the streets at night scourging to score some cheap shit. Now I have leprosy.

Ok well, I work 40 hours a week plus I DJ on the side, which means I sweat alot. Right now my head itches alittle to the point where its annoying. I mean I havent washed it since last friday

-Is it really bad if I just rinse my hair just to rinse the dirty out so my head doesnt itch?
-And at THIS point should I do what Slang said and try to get as much as the wax out of my hair as possible, with really hot water, so the dreads will knot up better? Correct me if Im wrong but if I start adding aloe in my hair, my hair will start caking up with aloe and wax....

I'd get all the wax out first mate. Then just use aloe occasionly to settle down some of the frizz. I've never used aloe though.. all the frizz gets sucked in eventually anyway.

For the itches Tea tree is a god send. Sooooothing! :D

With or without wax/dirt your head'll itch from your hair pulling for a few weeks anyhow. I'd say wait about a week from when you backcombed (it's not that terribly long) and then rinse them to try and get the wax out.

If you do choose to use aloe beforehand (very minute amount on scalp) to help your itchies I highly doubt it will "cake up". Aloe is very very easy to wash out, unlike wax it isn't resistant to water.

But as a warning your hair will most likely come undone to some degree when you wash, whether you do it tomorrow or in a week.

I washed after a little over a week...
By that time my hair was so greasy my dreads were not knotting, and falling apart... some say let them set, some say it doesn't matter when you wash... so I guess you have to be the judge of that.

Also, after you wash, try ringing them out/"backcombing" with a piece of wool...it helps to dry them completely, and to help them knot up... IMHO

Ok, so far I have washed my dreads twice. I couldn't stand the itch anymore. the first time I washed em I waited about 5 days. the second time, last night, I was about 6 days. So far they stayin together. However, Im getting some hairs that are escaping from the dread. That, and the usual frizzies. I took all the rubber bands off the roots and the ends, cept for one dread that I am binding with another dread because it is REALLY loose almost undreaded hair, so everything is looking ok. I bought some aloe, 99.7% pure aloe, and I use it when my head starts to itch. Heres my question.

If I start to itch my scalp, I get this white crap. Im guessing its the residue from the Aloe? I just want to make sure its not bug poop. Thats the last thing I need at this point. Is it aloe or bug doo doo?

TEA TREE TEA TREE TEA TREE!

Tea tree oil cures the itchies. Just rub a tiny bit on your fingertips and massage it into your scalp.

The aloe vera...I wouldn't put it on my scalp. When I do use it, I rub a pea sized drop in my hands and just smooth it over my dreads to calm the frizzies. But aloe vera DOES leave residue, so putting it directly on your scalp will leave the white crap.

And don't itch. Bad boy. when I get an itchy scalp I just poke myself in the head until it's all better. :) If you get dandruff, which you WILL, the dry skin has nowhere to go...Because you can't brush it out. Scratching is bad.

P.S...this site is awesome for advice..and you can take whatever advice you want, but in the end it's all trial and error. Go with what works for you.

Not sure for where you are. But in england most health stores do it and aroma therapy places. Come in a little vial. Which you can add to a squirty bottle. It's a life saver! lol.

Or you can get it on the internet, I've seen some at Walgreens over in the hair care aisle...but it has stuff other than tea tree, so I don't know how good that is.

I use an anti-itch tea tree gel. It's pink! I don't know the ingredients...but it works for me. It was all I could find whenever I started my dreads.

Try any store that sells essential oils.
