This is my story~ We were in the middle of moving last week, and my Austalian Shephard x found a bitch in heat down the road ~ ( as well as all the other male neighborhood dogs..) Now like any normal natural male dog they decided to fight....go figure~ Now Siah comes home covered from head to toe in mud and bite marks. Only 1 of his wounds was "kinda bad" No stitching was needed so my husband and I were cleaning and caring for his injuries, we did not believe the vet would have done anything different, I myself actually have animal care experience from animal science trade school training, Anyways like I said we were in the middle of moving, some chick down the road sees him and before even calling me calls her vet friend who then calls the local shelter! It was investigated by the county, they have no evidence of animal cruelty, however apparently the shelter has the authority to press charges! How is this abuse??? We are going to fight like hell in court, we have 2 other dogs who are extemely well cared for, we have a million friends who are willing to testify on our behalf, ughhhh help don't mind my huge rant lol, If anyone has any input/advice ~comment please!!

How is it that shit like this seems to go on all the time, and yet when I call constantly about our neighbors who keep their dogs tied on heavy metal chains in a back yard with no shade and very little water, I get no friggin response? :( I hope it all works out!, mama!

I think imo that if you have an animal you should have them under control at all times. I know the odd time they may get out and what not but Not having a leash or a harness put on your dog lead to your dog getting hurt... Not only did your dog get hurt but Who knows if your dog cxan contract rabies from another animal and get lukemia (passed on from blood or drool) Maybe only in cats? I had a cat that got out and it contracted lukemia ended up i had to put it down.
Not that your a "bad" owner but there are laws and they have to abide by them if they don't abide by them for 1 they can let another go and another.
You know there have been so many worse off cases then what your saying..

Just down the street from me 4 lil wee kittens were thrown in a dumpster in a garbage bag in 90 * F weather
Another there was a gentlemen was driving along the street when he came across this abandoned house this dog tide up no water or food and this dog had no where to go in a fenced in yard he was tide up to the fence in 95 * weather Come to find out the tenants fld the city. The ppl finally got caught.

What i'm trying to say is theres so many worse of cases but WE all need to take ownership for our own actions.

    Take it easy

Oh blah blah blah. You yourself admit that you lost "control" of your cat. These things happen and it's an obvious abuse of power coupled with a push from a busybody. A male dog smells a female in heat, good luck keeping "control" of him. You do the best you can and assholes still fuck up your life. That's a speedbump ya gotta get past. No big deal.

    You any better?
BTW my kitten escaped because he was so little and we didn't see him sneak by us. Needless to say we went out looking for him.

Theres a difference between an accident and NOT putting a leash on your pet. plain and simple and you know the truth hurts

You guys think you are so not ever wrong well i hate to break the news but everybody is once in awhile.

Thanks for all the replies folks...

Just for a different point of view to you fricknfrack~ we live in an extremely desolate area where there are no leash laws! I tried my best to restrain him after the initial fight~ however ~ he had a few bites on his neck and we were keeping his collar off him.....and we were MOVING and the doors were contantly open. yes there are PLENTY of other worse case scenarios however I AM a respsonsible pet owner ~ANDNature prevailswhen it comes to MATING!!!

Thanks zoomie ~ you're pretty much right fricken on dude

I think that the animal services could be a whole lot more effective if they actually pursued animal abuse/neglect cases that were actual cases of abuse/neglect. Perhaps, you could have done a better job at keeping your dog contained, but I really don't know the case, so I can't say that for sure. The thing is, there are a TON of cases where the animals need the intervention of animal services, but they just aren't willing to do so or *can't*. BTW, I've had some experience w/ Australian Shepherds, as I use to be in love with the breed, and they are a heard dog and heard dogs usually don't contain well to leashes. Hope all works out for you and your dog.

If you read my post correctly i stated that you are probably not a bad pet owner. So correct me if i'm wrong here but you don't need to correct what i have already stated.

You wanted comments i gave it to you
You throw it back in my face like its no good
If you don't watch your friggin animal you should get written up whether you like it or not. Dog should be on your property not wandering around the whole darn neighbourhood making friends.
I've moved several times with dogs cats etc and just that 1 time when my kitten got out did anything ever happen but after having 20 animals, i think thats pretty darned good. Whether your door was open or not.

Hey now, no need to get nasty.

I, who I consider a very responsible animal owner, have had my dogs escape on me. Accidents happen. It's not a matter of not watching the animal. Believe me, if you think you are above and beyond accidents, karma will come a knockin one day...

Your situation sucks, but luckily you didn't get sued by the other dogs owner. As for suggestions, get a letter from your vet stating that the care you gave for the wounds was adequate. That should stop the claims of abuse.

you know, my dad, the absolute biggest softy about animals, next to my mother, was arrested for animal abuse. he was trying to do the right thing by one of our dogs, but it all went to hell. the poor dog tore a toenail, he's 71 (my dad)! shit, he didn't notice. sometimes these animal abuse cases just end up so wrong. all i can say is that don't always assume that when someone is accused of animal abuse that they're mean, nasty, vicious monsters. sometimes something well-intentioned just went haywire. poor dad. he's rescued animals, protected wild animals, bled for too many to count. ONE 10 minute period, when he was exhausted, went wrong. feel no guilt if there's none to feel. do your time, no matter how gauling the "conviction." it's something you woulda done anyway.

With all that's in the news recently about "bait dogs" I'm sure they are going to pin this one on you in court. I mean, if they came out, found that you provided shelter, water, had food in the house and the dogs were not visibly abused or neglected...then thats the only thing I can think of that they are going to try to push. Did anyone from the shelter actually come out? If not, how can they press charges themselves with just then feedback from the county (stating there is no issue)?

I'm not sure where you live, but here in NJ, you can call about half dead creatures with no food or water....or injured animals that need help immediately and you usually get nowhere....there are so many times that I have just gotten fed up and went over and took the animals myself to care for and then find better homes for them....usually people that treat there animals like that dont care when they go missing.

We have a small farm and our dogs are loose all the time....one of those properties where you cant see your closest neighbor....but we went and had that underground fencing put in so if by chance they do decide to go towards the road or wander too far we dont have a problem....that does not stop other dogs from coming into the yard after our chickens though, but our guys do a good job of keeping them along with the foxes and coyotes away.....I'd like to see the local worthless shelter try something with us because one of our dogs had a torn ear from defending our chickens from a coyote!

I think the best thing to do in this situation is be prepared to have ALL documents ready for ALL of your animals.....vet visit print outs, health history, even grooming visiting history, receipts from pet stores, etc. AND PLENTY OF PICTURES of your home, property, other animals and if you are like me you have tons of pics of your dogs....this should prove that you are caring parents and the dogs live happy, healthy lives. The town or county is not going to want to waste time on this issue once they see this, especially since they were already there and found no issue. I would also pile everyone in the car and take a ride to the shelter and ask to speak with the manager (pets in hand!) and explain the situation, let him/her meet the dogs and you and your husband....some kindness goes a long way. : )

Neuter you male dog. And this probably wouldn't have happened. Why haven't you? Afraid it may damage his manhood? Autum and Mama just stated it won't.

Also, to be a responsible pet owner, you should either contain your animals within a fence or be aware of where and what they are doing at all times.

Live in farming or ranching areas and an unleashed free roaming dog is open to being shot by any rancher that wants to say they were a hazard to his crops or livestock. Value your dog, alter it, and confine or control it.
