In some ways it migth have go faster in the US cause there wasnt as many old deep rooted system to begin with as there was in the other countries, but since, it has became the same..
I wont say they are more free but different.
We are all build differently by the things that surround us, and how could people born in america not be influenced by it when it is enfluencing the whole world?

I live provencal french as it can be and without even trying, and i live in the midst of Copenhague. And that things got americanise thats doesnt matter at all, it has lost its meaning.
Americans dont know whats their ID anymore anyway. The world is imperfect, adn thats a fact, and there is no existing perfect way to do the thing. You cant say one is good or bad, you can say each and all are mixed bag.
There will be more difference betwen a guy from arkansas or texas, and a girl from New york, than between me and someone in California.
Land Borders dont define, inner borders does.

i never thought of the "american way" to mean that you must obey all rules no matter how just or unjust they may be.

my understanding was always the opposite. that our american government is based on certain philosophies - most notably that of unalienable rights of all people, the social contract between government and the governed, and primarily on liberty. obviously liberty is only relative in this sense, as government by nature must on some level and to some extent take away certain liberties. that said, government theoretically exists solely to serve the governed, and the governed willingly obey the government in exchange for the many benefits of living in a society of law, structure, and security.

we are given far more liberty and freedom than the serfs and peasants of yore (in general) and as such few people want to disobey too very many of the current government's laws.

also laws can and do change all the time, our government is very fluid and elastic.

the american way as i always knew it was that if you didnt like what was going on, you had every right to voice your opinion and try and get people to see it your way and change our ways. if that didnt work, you took matters into your own hands -first WITHIN the system- and try to change things through legal means. if that doesnt work but the government as a whole isnt entirely wicked yet, then you simply choose to disobey certain laws and try to stay under the radar for as long as possible. and if THAT doesnt work, then you're looking at full blown revolution.

if simply silently obeying the laws of the land is the "american way" then why would even fairly conservative americans glorify the founding fathers (revolutionaries for a relatively petty cause), harriet tubman (and other movers in the underground railroad - a HIGHLY illegal activity), thoreau (went to jail for not paying taxes to support a war he didnt believe in - but still glorified in american texts as one of our country's greatest writers) and so on.

clearly these issues are of quite a different right than things like being able to smoke pot or drink beer or something. but then again, personal liberties are, in my mind, important.

is the american way to not smoke pot simply because its illegal? no fucking way. the "american way" would be to try to CHANGE the law and make smoking pot legal, and if that doesnt work (it hasnt been working for over half a century) then just say "fuck it!" and smoke anyway. you're not hurting anyone.

 

the real story is they didnt come for the freedom, the freedom hadnt existed yet they came running from the law... when the law followed they fought it & created the freedom, which they slowly took away over time
& replaced with laws we now are continualy running from
its a cycle
its almost time to overthrow the laws, create freedom again & begin all over

I'm sure that some people came to the US to escape persecution, but I think that they're one of the smaller groups. Most immigration was for economic reasons: Europeans brought slaves, the Irish came to escape famine, Eastern Europeans and Russians came because the US was more industrialized than Eastern Europe (Russia was feudal until 1917). Even some of the very first immigrants, the Puritans, who truly were escaping persecution, went on to oppress others once they came here.

It also seems appropriate to give an honorable mention to the European genocide of the people indigenous to the Americas.

But hey, live free or die, or live anyway, I guess.

Oh, I also forgot to mention all of the Asian people that were used to build the rail roads. America was so free that the US government had to prohibit more Japanese immigrants for awhile!

the same way people from latin america do when crossing the borders.

They escaped unemployement, and some came for religious freedom but htey had it already, like the protestants.

some came to found land to can cultivate, cause it wasnt possible here.
Wasnt for free, they heard they could get it for free there, even it wasnt true always.
People came there to begin a business cause it was easier in the US as a new country there wasnt so many barriers between which families own what type of business, but it certainly became it,up to today, where it is still the english aristocratic families and landlord families that own the key business enterprises in the US.

Why they came? because they hoped for a better life. And thats why the US is all build on hope and faith.
