well I suppose you would like no protection for authors who are critical of religion or say something someone doesnt like . personally when the leader of iran put the fatwa out on rushdie Id have been happy to jail or publically hang hundreds of people in the uk who drove him into hiding, including cat stevens who said he wanted to see him burned to death , and I would have considered a war with the government of Iran. That does surprise me. Although I sympathize with your point about freedom of speech and opinion, let's be honest the reason Rushdie was being protected or has been knighted is because he's speaking out against Islam and its growing strength globally. This has suited western (British and American) political agendas to protect and celebrate these people, (Islamic dissenters). I doubt he'd be knighted if he was still copyrighting for advertising agencies, seducing people to buy products they probably never needed to begin with, he'd be there with all the other cut throat twats and their pin-striped suites and red braces. All in all the fact we look to these ceremonies and their pomp re-enforces the strict class divide this country has suffered for more than an age.
