Seriously I wouldn't recommend one as your first car as they are a bugger to drive and with a top speed of about 55 mph plus a hatred for hills and wind they can get a bit scary on the motorways.

Also in your first year of driving you will no doubt have all sorts of knocks and prangs (I wrote my first car off in 4 months). You could always start with an old Beetle as they are pretty much the same to maintain. Anyway you've got a couple of years to decide for sure.

Saying that though I wouldn't sell mine for the world and it's given me the most fun a vehicle ever could do.

They aren't cheap as far as old vans go (mine is a 1978 and I paid £2500 for it and that was before I tarted it up) but they hold their value and even go up, what you pay for one you will be able to sell it for at least the same amount ... as long as you don't crash it.

However if you are serious then check out the forums on www.volkszone.com and www.justkampers.co.uk where there are loads of people who will see you alright.

check out your local shops for a magazine called volksworld. not only do they have loads of for sale adds, but they give you loads of info on vdubs in general.

i had a 1974 camper as my first ever vehicle and in a way it was good to go straight from a learner car to that, coz it gave me alot of confidence. i figured if i could do that then i could do anything! what paul said about scrapes etc is true though. i put two big sratches on it in my first two weeks, and i hung it off a wall in a multistory car park aswell. was very gutted!!

i sold my van a few years ago after owning it for 6 years. i cried for about three weeks, but it had to go coz they are so expensive to keep on the road. i think the most important piece of advice i could give you is to save and save and save till you have enough to buy a really really good one. mine was £1700 (back in 1997) and that was very cheap. i spent a forune on it in the end coz it used to break all the time. it might be worth taking a short mechanic course coz i spent all my time with my head in the engine bay.

i dont want to try and put you off, coz they are lovely vehicles, but if you want a vw van then you will need to be prepared for spending lots and lots of money and definately get AA or RAC cover. you will need it!

on the plus side.....the amazing freedom they give you was the best thing ever. mine made it the whole way round europe. parking up on the beach front and having a home for the night is a lovely feeling. waking up to watch the sun rise over the sea through the window of a vw is a memory that wont ever leave me.

    hope this helps

    peace and love

    Hullo :)

aye, i'd check local papers...also, try and find an honest nice mechanic, and ask if s/he knows anyone who's selling one. there's a mechanic dude i know who hoarded about 5, done them up and sold them. they were quite cheap, and in good nic :) i aggree though, they aren't the best first car, and i'm unsure what the insurance would be.
