I believe it is. Heavy metal, death metal, black metal, and thrash / speed metal express the spirit of rebellion: a will toward power and glory in an age of complacency, materialism, and soon enough, degeneration. It is reminiscent of Romanticist classical music, filtered through the nihilistic frustration of the modern age we live in. Here's some more info about this, if anyone cares: http://www.hessian.org/ http://www.corrupt.org/news/1001.html http://www.anus.com/metal/
Hm... I also have a hard time believing it is by default MORE art than any other style of music. I think that if you write and play music for the music, no matter what genre or style, it's art. There's one thing, in that art (nowadays) must be unique, never done before, if it wants to be called art. If you go by this notion that a piece of music must have something revolutionary to be art, a lot of music (including a lot of metal) doesn't qualify, only those bands whose individuality shines through in their music.
Like in any music, or any art. – there are good and bad ones… It doesn’t matter who sells, but who does it the right way!
of course metal is art dude! it's what life is all about for us rockers! however, to each is own, and i'de say most people view it as noise. sad really.
Ah, but this poses the question: Is pop music art? Like the random assholes on the top 10 charts everyweek. Is pop music even an expression of anything, or is it just a product, like a box of tampons? Hmm... maybe tampons are art, too.
art is all about expression. thats what it all comes down to; expressing oneself in different ways. metal is definatly expression (a very raw and angry expression) even despita all this, i dont really see how anyone could argue that metal is NOT art.
well im an *NSYNC fan from back in the day...and i thought it was awesome music, but then again i was like 10. the people who are in those bands granted are a product of the music industry, BUT they have to atleast have SOME talent in order to get in the group in the first place. if someone uses singing as a way to convey their emotions and how they feel about things, no matter how lame we think the topic is, its art. its no different than someone using dark colors in their painting to show sadness or despair. the people in these pop groups are using some form of music as an outlet to let out how they feel. yes, sometimes the music isn't our top choice of tuneage, but in the long run, there are always gonig to be those people who their 13 year old puppy love lyrics appeal to and thats cool. as long as their message or whatever they wanna call it is gettin to the public, there's nothing wrong with it.
