I recently wrote a piece on Carson and Barnes Circus and the USDA violations they have, and yeah, the story was spurred by a PETA release (they asked the county commissioners to change laws allowing certain tools in animal handling).
So this week, in light of the international TB traveler who is getting treatent here in the Denver metro and a death in Pueblo two nights ago from TB, PETA sends out a "YOU MAY HAVE BEEN INFECTED WITH TB AT THE C&B CIRCUS!!!!" release.
There's no proof the elephants have TB, that the TB strain is transmissible to humans. This is plain and simple scaremongering.

These techniques make the organization seems even less serious when a real issue comes up.

PETA is terrible. They have zero credibility among anyone informed enough to have read their materials. Even most animal rights people like to keep them at arm's length.

I daresay PETA took a page from Goebels in technique and sleight of hand with issues.
goodness knows he made a huge impact on propaganda.
(Had his "work" in a PR basics class...can you believe?)

"The truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the [company you work for]."

    Something like that?

I agree the Nazi paralels are very fitting; what a nice touch that PETA even endorsed KFC gassing chickens en mass. I think any possible sense of respect and suppourt I had for them died then too.
And to think they did 'Holocaust on a plate' ... way to go with a consistent stance.

PETA seem to care about their own interests far more than the cause they claim to fight for. Which is why they will never end animal exploitation, because with the cause gone they won't get any attention.

I could agree to disagree; but they are so in your face that their actions have become representative of the whole movement [when PETA aren't technically AR in the first place], which makes it harder for other groups, and that's not fair.

I was just at Peta today picking up some DVD's and stickers to give away at a festival I am vending at...and I have to say that some of the people working there are some of the kindest people I know.

I would not be a vegetarian if I had not seen their meet your meat video and their doing a lot of good work on the planet.

They've made more of a difference in the world than I have and probably many of us here..actually probably all of us combined...

So I would not be so quick to pass judgment on an organization that's devoted itself to such a noble cause as animal rights. It takes courage to do a lot of what they do, it's not just some self-serving ego trip where their doing outrageous propaganda filled campaigns for their own entertainment. They believe in what their doing and their actually doing something about it...which is a lot more than a lot of people do.

Alex, I have worked around AR and veg issues for more than 20 years, and I'm sorry, the media department gave me incorrect information (that other journos had not bothered to check out), did not really know WHAT they were doing and then followed it up with scaremongering.
No respect left, even for the workerbees and volunteers.

hey, i'm not a big fan of PETA, but how i see it is, at least they're trying to LOOK as though they're on the animals' side.

and they've helped some people go veggie so thats good too.

but they are not without fault, to put it mildly.
