my gf was telling me that her friend (who is a vegetarian organic health nut) said there are growth hormones in tofu. maybe it is just hers in france (or england since she is there right now)? I am pretty sure my brand does not. It says no perservatives added and no genetically engineered ingredigents. But how can I tell for sure? My brand is Nasoya.

that pisses me off if my gf is right. I stopped eating meat, instead going for tofu to avoid that shit! and it is passed off as a much healthier alternative. But if it has growth hormones, I will be pretty pissed.

    please give me info

i have no idea, but remember that veg*ism isn't about tofu. i rarely eat it because i generally don't trust tofu because of the ingredients. try seitan or other ""meat alternatives""

sounds like utter BS. growth hormone would be used on an animal.
tofu is from soybeans, and while fertilizers could be used, your brand with no GMOs is likely organic.
THere is a hormone "mirror" in soy nd other plants called phytoestrogen which in extreme doses can act like natural estrogen secreted in the body.
Perhaps that is what she means.
I interviewed a doctor a couple years ago who brought that up. His opinion (he's a cardiologist who focuses on diet) was that it is soy additives that up that chance. So if you don't add soy powder to everything, you should be ok.

Not growth hormone but soy can definatley alter your hormones if you eat too much of it. I forget exactly what hormones, I think it alters your estrogen levels, which is an other than excellent step toward optimum health.

Not to mention tofu is so processed, and its basically just really processed beans. Your much better off with something like Miso or tempeh, that is certified organic.

Oh DM beat me to it, it's phytoestrogens.

I do know that about 90% of the soy crops grown today are actually Genetically Modified. So it's super important to get certified organic soy products. Theres no way there will be growth hormones in an organic product.

Yah my brand is not technically certified but they stand by the quality. I have heard good things about it.

I love tempeh and will look for it for sure.

i dont see how growth harmones could be in a plant food...animals are generally given growth harmones to speed up the act of fattening up so it doesnt take so long to get them to the chopping block(puke!!) people in china and other asian countries have used tofu for YEARS with no problems. im thinking the growth harmones are a myth hunny:)

    moderation.
the "problems" occur (in certain individuals) when one has tofu or processed soy every day and in large American/ Western diet amounts.

okay, If I can find tempeh I will start to get that more. I hear its hard to cook and hard to find around here.

Not so much of a western thing..more of an American (and to a lesser extent UK) thing, to have large portions. At least in France, everything was much smaller.

Soy contains a hormone similar to Estrogen. That's not necessarily bad, even if
you're male. It could be the reason why some asian populations have such a
high life expectancy and males don't get bald.
