If you eat the same thing every day, than thats bad. Potatoes themselves arent bad if you eat them in reasonable amounts, just like everything else...
I am going to have to disagree. Potatoes arn't even a vegetable they are starch. They arn't the same as say a green vegetable like broccoli or even a brightly colored vegetable like carrots. My grandpa is a diabetic and isn't allowed to eat potatoes anymore. I have heard the new food pyramid in this science magazine said potatoes are a bad carb along with white rice and should be used sparingly. I guess it makes sense since heart disease and diabetes are interconnected. I dont see why since the asians eat all that white rice all the time. Maybe the vegetables they eat with it counteracts the white rice. I heard in this magazine that switching to eating bad carbs instead of saturated fats is actually not healthy. It is a little better than alot of saturated fat but not by much. What is better is consume more unsaturated fats in ones diet. In some studies avoiding fat altogether actually is unhealthy and will promote heart disease. Bottom line is i dont think potatoes are that bad but there are better vegetables one can choose to eat.
i eat em along with aload of other vegatables and some form of egg, im trying to eat healthy but am quite fussy with my food , so i end up eatin the same thing almost everyday. i gotta have potatoes tho ,there my filler - upper.
Potatoes are much much better for you if you eat them cold than hot (doesn't have to be raw, just cold) I can't remember why exactly, but it's something to do with how the molecules crystalise and the speed it's let into the blood. Blah, i can't remember but trust me on this one.
Potatoes aren't good for you raw(toxic actually because they contain solanine and chaconine) but otherwise they are a fine source of calories, starch, carbs, and can act as fiber. I don't give a fuck what a food pyramid says, anything that comes from the earth is generally safe to consume. I'm not gonna stop eating something because some damn scientist thinks that its unhealthy. Also I'd like to see a link to your source ginseng, because I won't believe it until I check that shit out. White rice not good for you? That's odd considering the asian life expectancy is higher than the american one. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potatoes "But not until 2006 was it ever mentioned that every estimate of life expectancy which include Asian Americans live longer than anybody else, including the Japanese who are generally given credit for the longest in the world. Mormons also have a longer life expectancy than the Japanese, according to economist Thomas Sowell." Of course that could just be a characteristic of the race, but I don't think so seeing as american's eat shit for food (generally) and have large portions, which is exactly opposite of most asian cultures. I know asian life expectancy is higher and also they eat alot of white rice. I heard the ones who work in the field work off the bad carbs they obtain from the white rice but what about the rest who dont exercise so much and have a butt job but are normal weight? I wouldnt go so far to say white rice is good for you. It is still prob better than eating big macs but it isnt the best food choice. I know this asian guy who i work with that eats white rice with sausage and how healthy is that? I mean cmon white rice and fish would be ok or with vegetables, but a huge sausage link? Ive seen him eat it a few days in a row. Ok back to your argument anything from the earth is safe to consume? Hum comfrey comes from the earth, do you want to eat some steamed/boiled comfrey roots with your broccoli and get liver disease? Coconuts come from the earth and are also high in saturated fat. Most vegetarians claim meat is bad and full of fat and cholesterol but there are exceptions like with fatty fish which is usually high in the good fats unlike hamburgers which are high in the bad fats: saturated. Not all plant foods are bad as well as not all animal foods are bad. There are exceptions and it isnt true cause it comes from the earth that it is automatically good for you.
Yea the way I saved myself from making an outlandish claim was adding that little "generally" clause into my statement. Nothing from anywhere is 100% good for you. Same from the earth, animals, w/e. You have a good post, people should check out what they are eating to be more sure of what's in it. I like animal foods, especially fish, but potatoes are not bad for you. French fries from mcdonalds, those aren't good, but a nice baked potato does no harm.
"The glycemic index pyramid is a pyramid-shaped guide to eating foods, as determined by their glycemic index. (The shape is used to illustrate how to eat more of lower GI foods than of high GI foods.) Vegetables (at least 5 portions a day) Gross bread, grain, pasta, and other low glycemic, amyloid food (3–6 portions daily) Fruit (2–3 times a day) Nuts, seeds and shell fruits (eat 1–3 times a day), and oils pressed from these (1–2 times a day) Pure proteins like meat, fish, poultry, eggs (up to 2 portions daily — red meat not more than 1–2 times a day) Dairy products (1–2 portions daily, preferably low-fat products) White bread, rice, potatoes, sweets (cookies and cakes) — eat rarely"
Your diet is low in protein and vitamins. If you eat them fried, your caloric intake could be too high. You should eat more varied. There are a lot of vegetables similar to potato, like the Yam, the Sweet Potato, Taro, Plantains (cooking Banana) and Ube (Purple Sweet Potato). Most of them are higher in vitamins, but NEVER eat them raw, especially TARO is so poisonous it shouldn't even be peeled without gloves. If you keep the calories low (by eating cooked, steamed or grilled food) and add some real vegetables, this diet is not really unhealthy. Sout-Pacific islanders were known to eat mostly Taro, Yam and Coconut Milk and were nevertheless very healthy until the Americans introduced Spam.
Sweet potatoes are healthier than white potatoes... I'm pretty sure you can juice sweet poatoes raw..I've done it before, but I haven't done it everyday so I imagine it could be toxic in large amounts. Potaotes are in the nightshade family and many people can get very irritated by consumption. White potatoes are very hyrbidized and starchy/sugary as ginseng said...definatley not an ideal food. Wild potatoes are like the size of your thumb, their not supposed to be as big as you see in stores. A lot of potatoes are actually genetically modified too. Green leafy vegetables are the healthiest vegetables imo.
