Copied from some website. - "Rice is a good source of thiamin, niacin, phosphorus, iron, potassium and folic acid. And, rice is healthful for what it does not contain. Rice has no fat, no cholesterol and is sodium free. Rice is also non-allergenic. Rice is a great source of complex carbohydrates, which is an important source of the fuel our bodies need. Health experts recommexnd the largest portion of our diet should come from complex carbohhydrates such a rice, bread, cereal and pasta." I love rice, its so good. I am curious though because i have heard white rice has no nutritional value . It is brown rice that helps the body. Is this true? Does it depend on the white rice? Or is it all bad?
this is where nutrient timing comes in....basically, you want to eat low on the GI index for the most part but there are times, especially after a workout where eating high GI index carbs is a good idea
I always thought that white rice was kind of the same as white bread. It was bleached and all of the nutrients were taken out. I could be wrong though, so don't quote me.
I have heard that brown rice is better than whiote rice too.even when we compare the price of the two, brown rice is more expensive...
As long as you eat enough vegetables, you shouldn't care too much. When the japanese started eating only white rice in the late 1800's, the poorer classes evolved 'beri beri' a sickness based on vitamin B deficiency. It was because poor people ONLY had rice and nothing else. This shouldn't be a problem nowadays. Brown rice is more 'chewy' and not so easy to eat. When it comes to nutrition, it's definitely better, but it can't be stored that long because the hull contains oils which spoil over time. By the way, parboiled white rice is more nutritious than plain white rice, although not as good as brown rice.
^^^Hey thanks for the info. I like the texture of white basmati over brown basmati. According to Wiki, parboiled may be the best solution for a firm, not chewy and nutritious rice. I'll try parboiled next shopping trip.
Rice is very acidic and should only be a small portion of any meal, with a really big green organic salad. You also have to be careful with conventional rice products, many are genetically modified and grown with pesticides. Obviously brown rice is a lot more nutritious than white rice which is completley stripped of the germ and B Vitamins(needed to fight stress and buffer the nervous system from environmental toxins). White rice and any kind of white bread eventually leads to neurotic types of behavior and blood sugar imbalances when it's done regularly. I think wild long grain rice would actually probably be a step up from brown. You can get it organic at any health food store
I think brown rice like in a bulk qty bought from an asian store would be healthier than most of the rice a roni you can buy at a regular grocery store. Alot of the rice o roni contains trans fatty acids. If it says partially hydrogenated oils in the ingredients then it isnt worth buying. I thought the same like what the hell when i read some of the instant oatmeal like peaches and cream ingredients said: partially hydrogenated oils. I thought oatmeal was supposed to be good for you and help remove cholesterol, not add to the problem. Partially hydrogenated oils are bad ive heard as well as monoglycerides and diglycerides. Most whole wheat breads arnt even safe to buy. I guess we cant even go to a grocery store and buy bread anymore since it contains trans fats. I guess you have to read up on everything these days to know if it is safe to eat. It seems like they want to kill people since they add all these bad trans fats these days. I read somewhere that brown rice is a good whole grain similar to oatmeal and barley. It aids in cholesterol reduction. I tried it onetime at a sushi bar and personally I think sushi doesnt taste good with brown rice. Don't get me wrong I like brown rice but not with sushi. Brown rice doesnt taste as good but you can buy seasoning packets to add flavor to it like seaweed, salmon...etc.
If you soak brown rice at least two hours before hand but preferably overnight it will not only cook quicker but will be easier to digest. In winter time I use water that I just boiled as really cold water is less effective .
I disagree. Alot of asian people eat rice and are quite healthy. They of course eat the white rice which isnt healthy but maybe the vegetables they eat with it counteract the bad effects of the white rice. I read somewhere that brown rice is similar to oatmeal and barley and it helps in preventing plaque buildup on arteries. It comes to show that you cant just eat fruits and vegetables. Whole wheat grains, as well as nuts and legumes are also important. Ive heard protein is important in any diet but the problem is alot of the common sources of protein are also high in saturated fat or cholesterol. I just dont even like the idea of eating sausage anymore. Id rather eat a bowl of oatmeal than eat a few artery clogging sausage links. Black beans ive found out are a good source of protein that is devoid of saturated fat or cholesterol and actually helps the body get rid of cholesterol.
^^^^ I have already stated here http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=265493&page=2&pp=10 It is trans fat that is bad for you not saturated fat, so why do you keep going on about saturated fat? High cholesterol is symptom ,not cause of heart disease.
How acidic? What pH are we talking about? You realise the hydrochloric acid in the human stomach is pH2 ?
i don't think he's talking about the pH of the food itself but of the digested end-product as it enters the bloodstream and alters it's pH. He should've specifically stated acid forming to avoid confusion. Apparently if the blood becomes too acidic it'll counter by drawing alkaline metals like Ca from bones.
