im looking for a good college to teach me how to become a great writer. i know that is an area that is hard to define, but im hoping to find a college that focuses on those skills. If it has courses in philosophy, art, history, and foreign language, theatre, and photography that would be wonderful. Or even any courses in nature and theology. any information you guys have would be helpful. thank you! ~Jen
The Writer's Workshop at the University of Iowa is very well known as being an excellent creative writing school. Make sure you have samples of your writing when getting ready to apply for a creative writing degree because many admissions will require it (plus it might just look good for a supplement!).
I can honestly say that no one learns how to write in college... writing is something that comes naturally to a person... I honestly don't see how someone can be taught how to write... unless it's analytical writing or journalism... which are limitations on writing more than anything. Having said that... try Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado... they supposedly have a very good writing program. It's a very small hip Buddhist university.... expeeeensive.
Naropa isn't all that expensive. I agree though that you can't really be taught to write, but if you're willing to shell out the money for it, you can build a network of contacts that might help you break into the literary world. It also helps to have people read your work with a critical eye.
thank you. i forgot to add literature. I love to read and it gives me inspiration. Not to mention, it influences the way i write. i love classics. if that helps.
Ok, Comming from the streets my advice to you is, make the world your personal college, until you get the real thing. Especially if you want to write. All it takes is getting used, and before you know it, you're a natural journalist, and your perception knows no bounds.
