For those who don't know, with the widescreen (or letterbox) format, you see the entire scene/screen as it was shown originally in theatres. Besides, if you want to run close captioning, there's a better chance the words won't get in the way. The detail isn't as great, though.

With the full-screen format, however, you get better detail, and the picture takes up the entire screen. On the down side, more likely than not, the edges of the scene get chopped off so you don't see what's on the fringes.

For me, i'll take the widescreen if i'm watching an action-intensive flick like any Star Wars episode. I don't want to miss a single element or event being shown. But, if it's a comedy or romantic comedy, full-screen will do.

If anyone else can add to the merits or demerits of either format, feel free to post...

I'm not sure why, but I usually prefer fullscreen.

What genre of movies do you generally like?

For me, like i intimated, I like to see the kissing and love-making shots up close and personal.

I always prefer widescreen--I want to see the movie the way the director filmed it.

I like most genres, but especially horror, thriller, suspense, mystery, historical fiction, comedy, period pieces, sci-fi, etc.

I use widescreen.. but then I watch on my monitor and that has native 16:9 resolution so it doesn't cut any off and I don't get empty screen space. I'd understand using fullscreen if you had a 4:3 screen, but more often than not widescreen IS 16:9.
