Any tips of getting through night shifts?! I am about to start another week of nights and I have an essay due next week so I need to do it this week and I need to fit in sleep!!

Any ideas of the best way to manage both? I always lose soo much sleep and with this essay I can't afford it!!

standing up will keep you awake the american marines used to hit themselves with nettles you could try cold water too ,
if you want to stay awake long term nap for 10 minutes every hour thats not sleep just close eyes and be quiet but dont give yourself more than 10 minutes

Nagh that is not to bad.
When I did night shifts I made sure I slept at the same times every day.
    Got myself into a routine.
I dunno you might find yourself working on a essay for that little bit to long and not taking the time to sleep/relax. Then it is counter productive.
I also ''power napped'' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_nap - that helped me stay awake at night.

I remember this guy who used to work as a doctor. He was on call through out the night. He got through the nightshift by drinking lots of cola. Well, anything is better than listening to the Commodores.

Yeah... I do see a lot of docs drinking coke! I forgot to bring any drinks with me last night so I must prepare!! Oh well, I'll survive! Night shifts are not too bad, I like coming home when everyone else is only beginning their day!

Caffeine is weak shit, get yourself some meth ;)
But seriously, if you have to do it on a regular basis, look up polyphasic sleep. It;s where you only sleep for 20 minutes every 3 hours or so. Takes a while to get into it, you feel like shit for a week or so, but it works as long as you're regular with your naps.
Night shifts aren't bad - personally I'd like to work one, the night shift at Tesco would be dead quiet, no fucking chav customers to deal with and more pay than the day shift!
9-to-5 isn't me. 9PM to 5AM would suit, except I like my daylight as well as my moonlight.

I liked the night shift when I worked it a couple years ago. Like mbworkrealted said, you get a routine going eventually. I did a 9pm-5am, slept between 1pm and 7ish. It did feel like caffeine helped. I used to take a fake red bull thing called Boost, 1 litre of. It was just various forms of sugar, hods of caffeine and some B vitamins for good measure.

Plus, are there many people on your night shift? Cause if not, I was alone when I did mine, got choice of music, free food and a spliff break! Not bad :)

It is ''related'' as in Matthew B work related. I set it as a email address for work related matters. I was too lazy to alter it for here. Some people seem to think that I work for the goverment and posting in these forums is my ''work'' - so it is a bit ironic really.

    Ps.
I don't work for the goverment

from my experience, laying down is the WORST thing you can do when trying to stay awake, especially if you are already really tired.
