In Seattle weed can be pretty frickin good if you know the right people and at a reasonable price ($200-250 an Oz). But I dont know..... maybe it's different in Seattle but weed and hash dealer in many cases, don't know where their merchandise came from and what strain it is derived from. People don't really lnow what strain they are selling and that probably because it passes through some many hands before arriving at the central dealers around here. Even the dealers that push the real weight around here don't even try and tell you what strain it is. When some one says "I smoked some Purple Kush" here it's usually just because it was some purple chron that the dealer called purple kush obviously because it was purple. Some of the names they come up with can be hilarious! Now that doesn't bother me when some one says it in person, but I have to wonder when SOME of the people on the forums here try and compare weed by the strain with some pne over the internet. I guess it doesn't apply as much to growers, as long as they specify they seed company. For the people buying an eight of "white widow from this one guy" though, and then comparing it's quality to another like saying "northern lights is better". What are your thoughts on this? Am o totally trippin balls? Is it just Seattle?
I wrote a big long explanation for this, then deleted it once i realized how sick i am of explaining shit like this
I live in Vancouver, 2 hours north of you in my entire 7 year smoking career, ive only ever identified 1 strain, and it was Kush, and i could consistantly tell when other people had the same strain a grower i knew was giving me never have people tried to push strains on me, never have i had the option to buy "Mids" for cheaper then "beasters" Weed is weed, I smoke good weed, and never have i had weed that has not got me high end of story.
its not just about getting high. its about getting the high you want for the money. different strains produce different highs. i know what strain im smoking when i buy headies... when i buy middies, i dont. i prefer to know... ...make friends with growers.
i deal with trees and plants, so i use taxonomical names with them because one common tree name is different in different places. we need to go by the taxonomical names for weed cannabis sativa var. purplokusho cannabis sativa var. widdowawhitia 'nana' maybe that would be possible in 100 years when it's legal and a government monopoly
The only one who sometimes knows EXACTLY what strains are what, are seedbanks and in my experience since all seeds look pretty much the same... things get mixed up and even they don't always know what strain is which. I tend to judge herb I buy on whether or not it is an indica or a sativa and there is one seedbank I use that seems to be pretty good when it comes to IDing the strains they sell. So your basically right... nobody knows except a handful of trustworthy seedbanks and the growers that purchase from those banks.
I never trust someone when they tell me what strain they have. I look at it, smell it, and smoke it. Then I decide if it's worth what they're asking. I don't care if they say purple haze, northern lights, sour deisle, or watever, it's either good weed, ok weed, or useless weed. If I truely am getting a 'name brand' weed then fantastic, if I'm not, it still gets me high so I don't care.
There is one type of person that I do trust when they tell me a strain and that is old Hippy growers and even old smokers in general. Seems like everyone over the age of 35 smokes the dankest shit .... Atleast the ones I've met. I mean when you get 20 years smoking under your belt your bound to have a few good connects/ growers.
Most people I know and have met rarely ever know what strain they are buying/smoking. They are told if it's grow indoors/hydroponically or shwag/dirt weed to know wheter or not they want to pay for it. I have known people to sell legal pot passing it off as a decent strain of homegrown. I've known seed banks to sell one strand, then come to find out it's something completely different than what was bought. If you truly want to know what strain you are buying/smoking become a pot expert. Read up on all the different strains and all their little hints as to what they are...color, shape of leaves, hairs, scent, etc. That or become good friends with a grower and become their apprentice.
I always wondered this myself, because I've never come across anyone in my area who makes a big deal (or any deal, really) out of strains.
See I don't know that some one would know how it was grown either?? Is there any way to tell some hydro from just some good bud? Is it like stickier? or more moist?
your money only provides what your willing to spend it on. my point was if i want an indica high (which i almost always do) i wont spend my money on a sativa strain. get what im saying? if i want a NL#5 high i wont settle for a Haze high. they are both great. but if i want indica, im going to buy indica.
Hydro will tend to be more chemical in taste and bring less of the natural taste of a given strain out. Hydro is all about yeild over taste. Variations in general will occur with different growing environments. Its like saying all variations of coffee, wine, ciggarettes, etc are the same. Sure for some they are. The more developed your palate becomes the easier it is to tell basic background genetics of plants. You would have to probably be a fairly good size grower to start to develop it.
sometimes your able to tell if a plant was grown hrydoponicly if it tastes "chemically" when you smoke it. it means the bud wasnt flushed before it was harvested. otherwise, there is no noticable difference. you can get great bud from the earth, from a pot, and from a hydroponic setup.
Yah dont believe what people tell you. Some kid tried selling me "dro" which was definitely mids.....I asked him what dro even means and he didnt know. pfft idiot it means water. its not like im dumb and dont know the differnce between shwag and dank. also when people say something like hey I got this triple stacked green pill thats heroin based or mescaline based, its always bs. some dude tried telling me he could get triple doubles before, im like dude ur fucking stupid.
