I know - I was one of those people that accepted that the word was all the things you describe below. I altered my opinion.
If some black/white people don't find offence in it - fine.
I don't like those kind of people but understand their logic.

It would be nice if that was true.

That has to be the most liberal load of bull I have ever read from you.
I do appreciate what you are saying and your attempt to normalise the word - but if a BNP/KKK member went upto ice cubes kids and said ''you fucking big lipped n***a'' - i assure you that chap would be dead.

What is going on is a basic confusion of two words. LAMatthews suggested that replacing 'er' with 'a' does not make it a different word - it does, and in fact you don't even need to do that. The word has branched at some point to become a homonym, so even assuming you spell them both "******" you still need to recognise you are actually talking about two distinct words with separate meanings which share an etymology but have been shaped by alternative contextual usage almost to become antonyms of one another.

KKK bloke: fuck off you ****** (translation: go away you ignorant racially inferior person)
BB girl: shake it, nigga! (translation: dance like a loon, mate!)

    Context is all.

It is one of those taboo words, though I feel with the way we react to it suggests that there is in some way inverted snobbery or indeed racism going on with how we condemn white people but accept that black people have taken charge of the word and we are 'totally cool' when its used.

    Again from a previous thread when this same word was being debated it does sting and has an embarrassing and nervous use even when used jokinly. It is also easy to take the high ground when taking the line of white people are racist when they use it. I say best left alone and sent to the jail dictionary for life;
    [IMG]and hang the fucker!

Fascinating etymological questions aside, I can understand why Channel Four did what they did, after the last racist bullying incident, they're just being careful. I hope the girl gets a chance to defend herself, and it's good that it's brought this question into the public eye.

The same thing is going on with the word "gay" at the moment in an even more problematic way because the new meaning of "gay" (or "ghey") is not positive like nigga but actually means "naff" or "rubbish". It's still a case of a new homonymous meaning coming into being though, if you'll excuse the homo-related pun:eek:

Rappers use the word ''nigga'' on their albums but in reality it is still ''******''
I guess it also depends what part of the US you are within.
I do understand the supposed difference and the way the two words have branched off from each other.
That is why I said ''you fucking big lipped n***a''
All this bullshit about homonym's etc etc etc would fly out the window.
Both words are fine [i guess] if said with consent. If said in a offensive manner - again all that bullshit goes out the window - it will become offensive.
I've heard to many black/white academics try and articulate how unoffensive the word is now - and to many black/white people believe them - to me it still is.

Are you kidding? I don't live an isolated life, and beside in rap music,(Though never listened to much of that as it was) I never heard the word "******" or any variation of it growing up. I am shocked when I hear people around me say it, and it does bother me. It's the same with the word "fag" I never heard that one either growing up, and then I started hanging out with gay people and they were calling eachother fags right left and center, but if a straight person said it, the fight was on! I think they are nasty words and are used to cut people down. I could never get away with using the word ****** even if in a context that you say is not offensive. I don't think you can use such words without feeling at least some prejudice towards the individual.

I do sort of admire what lithium is attempting to do .
I just think he has never had someone say it to his face - with so much contempt you wonder why you are in the country.

In a perfect world we could use whatever words we wanted and no one would be offended but that is not the case. These words all carry negative connotations. I have a friend who likes to refer to me as "bitch" and it's supposed to be in the buddy, friend way, and that bothers me, I don't like it.

can white people say the word "******" now ?
Hmmm seems silly when people are on 1/2 the MTV shows and albums sold in the world saying that word and yet down here on the streeet you say that and yoyu are socially outcast forever - you are socially dead.

daaah look at these two ways

    1) unless you are in the political classes and I mean those who can even consider being elected - youre a wog - these days we're all fucking wogs no matter what colour we are no matter what nation we are in.

    2) people should just grow the fuck up and stop being so namby about it. I love it when my friends call me a honky and a white **** !
yet I still cannot bring myself to say ****** -
anyone ever heard - sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me

look I dont care what you call me - I dont care what you say I am
I just dont care if its a name !! how can a name hurt anyone who left the playground a long time ago ?

the point is if you think a word like, wog or ******, is offensive then you havent learned a valuable lesson in life. You havent learned that everyone unless they are politically powerfull - and I mean anyone who does not wield political power - is a wog or a ****** including me !

let me qualify this I am not trying at all to be racist - I am saying these words go beyond race they are a statement of status these days and though I do not agree with their use as directed by for example a fascist toward someone a fascist dont like - I am all for calling myself a wog ! I am a white guy who considers mytself to be a wog - because that is exactly how people in governement and the civil service etc see us mere voters - us canon fodder - us cattle !

Believe me I am not making a racist statement - quite the opposite I am saying people should realise these words nowadays have no power to harm !!!

listen man my case is this: ~

As a white bloke in the uk - if I see racism I do something about it - if I sound like I might have said something racist my friends say come come you cant mean that !
white cultuire in the uk - as my experience goes is non racist - I am white - my niece is married to a black man, my nephew is dating a woman whosew parents came from india. My family escaped frm its white past and has now joined the rest of the world. In the UK I think only the seriously deranged and the extremely immature and uneducated are racist! when I talk to people - only after do I stop and think - he was asian or black - no !!!!! race is not at the forefront of my thinking I hardly see peoples colour seriously - I dont see in terms of skin colour. I see in terms of whether what they are likeable and really I honestly only see skin colour as an afterthought

Yes, that's you, and I'm the same way, but racism is defiantly not "dying out"
