A roundup of concerns and problems with Windows XP SP2 from the early adopters: Many, many users are reporting problems with SP2 limiting outbound TCP/IP connections. This appears to be nailing anyone who makes heavy network use of their machine, including especially users running P2P applications. A Microsoft blog rounds up some reports, as does SANS. Microsoft has objected to people helping them distribute SP2. http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/08/12/169252&tid=201&tid=164
A security hole in the "security controls" was published today, rouge activex controls can be used to unkowingly change your security settings
ok, I have SP2 installed on one machine on a network of 3-4 (depending who's logged there at the time) and I'm having a few problems with accessing the network drives and shared folders on the machine with SP2 on it, other than that there's no heavy TCP/IP use on there but it does seem to be a bit of a problem. I think I'm going to get rid of it and maybe install it in a few months when they've sorted it out a bit better...
You should be able to just turn off the security settings to allow file and print sharing, or configure it the long way...
I installed it, have been using it for a few days now - it works a charm. I'd say get it (you're going to have to sooner or later).
I find it to be too much of a hassle, and eventually reverted back to SP1. I experienced experience communication issues with services on my MultiPASS. Anyone else have issues?
No problems with SP2 here on two machines. Mind you, the first thing I did was disable Window$ firewall. That's just bound to cause issues.
I'm glad I came across this topic. At work one machine was upgraded to put the SP2 on it but the terminal I use has not. The only reason being that there are too many downloads going on right now. After reading all the posts I'll wait to do mine for a couple of months too so I can make sure most of the kinks are worked out. I haven't downloaded it at home yet either and will wait on that too. I feel that updates like this are necessary though but it really is a shame that so many problems arise because for most people I know they can't comprehend what to do in order to fix a lot of things that may get changed. When it comes to TCP/IP settings I'm pretty clueless myself so I would just like to feel confident in knowing I'm downloading something necessary, that will work, and that doesn't present any major conflicts. Right now it doesnt sound like it.
I would rather throw my computer out of the window then install SP2... it adds definitely NO security, it is much safer to protect you little baby with OpenSource programs then with those MS-firewalls etc, I am sure they are all spyware... besides this, SP2 has more security holes than it fixes. And it is surely spyware. No way!
LOL, I don't mean any disrespect, but you guys make me laugh... everyone that thinks Microsoft have nothing better to do than track YOU!!!
I downloaded that piece of shit this morning, and instantly the only thing that could access the internet was messenger and updates. I tried to reset that damned firewall to allow more programs but no joy. I Then uninstalled it and now even messenger wont work. I decided to go the easy route and system restored to two days ago. still no joy. I then broke down and called dell ( my pc is only 3 months old) and we tried to use the restore disk. I can ping a network server, but neither dial up or broadband will connect to IE I would try mozilla or some other explorer, but I cant get on the internet to download it. Now I am getting the blue screen of death when I run windows set up. I dont have the codes with me at work, but I get the same error codes whenb I I run chkdsk /f as I do when boot with the restoration disk. at some point I got all the way til it told me I have no hard drives connected . how can that fucking even happen? I can run all my programs that are nto internet, but I cant get on the internet!!!ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGG . At this point I am backing up all my important data and hoping I can format. Any one got any ideas what the fuck I might try before formatting? If I do format I am trashing dells version of XP. I woukld like to ditch windows altogether but I know nothing about Linux. will my other software be compatible with linux?
Works perfectly for me, it also changes the windows code wich is a good thing(usually) i experienced faster boot times and application loading(slightly).
I am by no means computer wise and can barely work my way through all the mumbo-jumbo of the computer language.I do know this much though,if you are running pirated XP systems, every time I have downloaded any micro-shit updates they have gutted my system. The last update that I down loaded screwed my system up so bad that,I was down for over a month.I finally just jerked my hard drive and replaced it and started over. So as far as this service pack 2 goes, there is no way in hell that I am going to download it.I will also say that if any one is running illegal systems,to stay away from all micro-shit updates.I have it from a very knowledgable source, that micro-shit has a worm-virus that seeks out pirated OS's,shows itself as a upgrade and once you download it,it corrupts your system to the the point of total uselessness.I know this first hand, because I have had 3 major crashes, and they have all occurred after I downloaded an upgrade. You can take that info for what it is worth, but I have learned my lesson and I will not ever upgrade the system again.I wish I was more knowledgeable in computer language so I could switch to Linux and tell Bill Gates to go fuck himself, until then I will continue to use his shit for free.
I asked Dell about it, they said if you have had no problems, dont download it. Its like pouring cement on tear in the rug. it fixes it but WTF!!!!! if you cared about you r pc to begin with, these fixes arent nessecary. they are security issues for people that buy HP's from Walmart and do nothing to actually protect themselves from preditors. Its like painting your pin# on the outside of your wallet and being mad when the guy that that found it/stole it withdraws money from you account. Service pack 2 sucks.
I didn't realise quite how much paranoia there was about Microsoft out there! There is no 'worm virus' from windows seeking out pirated copies of windows, I know this because Ive set up around 15 systems with pirated copies and not one of them has had a complaint and all (apart from 1) are updated automaaticly from Windows, pretty much everyone I know uses pirated copies as well and they've never had a problem. A few of the patches do cause problems but then that's usually when people don't look into what they've installing before clicking the OK button. I wouldn't be surprised if SP2 did have a little spy ware in it but I'm wondering what that comment was based on, is there any more info about it anywhere?
There is a lot of interesting info in this thread. I haven't heard anything about a Microsoft worm either but since I have a full version of XP Pro that I bought I'm not one who would be in the know with that sort of information either. Last night the SP2 update finally showed up for install on my home PC and I didn't put it on. I can relate to the interpretation from Dell because the setting controls change to be all bubbly and big and obvious to use. I noticed it on the one PC at work that has it on there. It really does seem like an update to help out less experienced PC users.
Service Pack 2 is supposed to find the pirated copies and report them to Microsoft. This is what the first SP was supposed to do, but failed miserably. My buddy was on the phone with Microsoft and the tech said this: "Even I would not install Service Pack 2 into my system."
