I had often wondered where the term "sweet tasting" came from. Now, unfortunately, I do :)

    Diabetes mellitus

Disease in which the pancreas does not function properly. Victims of this disease will have high glucose blood sugar. Victims may suffer from: cardiovascular disease (doubled risk), chronic renal failure (it is the main cause for dialysis in developed world adults), retinal damage which can lead to blindness and is the most significant cause of adult blindness in the non-elderly in the developed world, nerve damage, erectile dysfunction (impotence), to gangrene with risk of amputation of toes, feet, and even legs.

Doctors would test by tasting the urine. If it was sweet tasting then it meant the patient had diabetes.

When I was 11 or 12, my brother and I were hiding, lying behind a low hedge on our backs when a stream of warm liquid began to shoot over the bush and onto us, some drops actually hit my mouth. I somehow knew, it was pee. I'd never tasted it before, but the circumstances clued me in. It tasted gross. Not at all sweet. And much later, when I read about golden showers, and pee drinking, it was easy for me to decide it was not my bag.
In case anyone need know, my friend, whether it was knowingly or not, peed over the hedge, on us. I don't think it was a fluke that he happened to pee right there, myself.
But, on a related note, it might be an idea for people who are into peeing on each other to encourage diabetics to check it out. When life gives you lemons...
