    Hey there,

I am thinking of backpacking around Goa this summer, does anyone know of any good websites to look at - about places to stay, what to take etc?

Have never been to India before so have no idea what to expect!

    Ta,
    Love and Peace

seriously just get there and you'll work it out...Never been to Goa but every other tourist area in India has tonnes of accomadation to choose from...Don't book in advance, it's always a rip off and is totally unnecessary...isn't half the fun sketching about with no real plans whatsoever? :)

You should take as little as possible...take 3 pairs of shorts, 3 pairs of socks, 3 pairs of underwear, 3 pairs of t-shirts or vests...passport...money belt...a towel or two...mp3 player...a book....everything else is really not necessary in my opinion...When I went to india I overpacked ridiculously, I regretted it!

If you need to pick up additional supplies, like if you decide to go into the mountains you can get all the stuff you need for cheap there...

In India you can probably expect: amusing marijuana munching cows...a fair amount of hassle from touts...some horrific poverty...but also some magical experiences that'll probably touch you on a profound spiritual level if you open your heart to the place and let go...Don't resist it...you'll probably end up loving the place, but sometimes you'll wonder why lol that's how it was with me anyway...very love-hate...

    aight!

You can get dirt cheap plane tickets from sta travel to mumbai...My friend picked up a single to delhi for £150 (direct too), apparently was just as cheap to mumbai. That was with virgin airlines.

Yeah the cows really do it for me lol Feeling a bit culture shocked? No problem, go for a walk and watch the cows causing big traffic jams whilst the indians try to work out how to move them without causing too much harm to the animal! :D They are also really cute, it's the big moon eyes...Not like english cows, they are much smarter and free to express themselves :D

Seriously though, India usually touches most people...You'll have an amazing time. :D

Excellent!! And if I can get cheap flights like that, it will be soo much better! You think it's safe to go alone, or better with others?

    Sorry for all the questions!!

I met plenty of solo female travellers.

Sure, you may get hassle from the indian men, but if you are strong willed and project the image that you aren't a woman who will take any shit from them, it'll just remain a minor annoyance...Nothing else. I've never heard of it getting violent (not saying it doesn't happen though) or anything sinister. In general India is an extremely peaceful country, I even found the soldiers in Kashmir/Ladakh to be really nice blokes...Just exercise commonsense and be strong.

I also think that India is the kind of place that is better to travel solo...Especially if you are interested in meditation or yoga. I found it really easy to completely lose myself. Think it's just the diversity of the culture, all the general weirdness and the mind-blowing landscape...Sounds horrible cliche but the place really did change my life. I found it very hard at times travelling alone (like 2 days on sleeper trains) but in retrospect I think I got much more out of it.

But then you can always go out there with a friend, then split up and meet again later...solo vs travelling with friends, both have there pros and cons...

This is your first time travelling yeah? If so, you are making a brilliant choice by going to India...Trouble is everything will seem a bit tame afterwards in comparison heh :D

I'm sure you can find some help once you get there. You can also try checking their official website.
