This time I blended up what ended up being about 100 mL of powder of bay leaf with 30 cloves in it. I expect at least 3x my previous yield. Is there anyone who would like instructions on making extract so they can participate in documenting the specific effects of bay leaf? People experimenting with raw leaf would be nice too. Anyone who can get FRESH leaf will be crucial. Don't be shy.
I'm up for plain bay leaf. Maybe extract, depending on complexity. I'm checking around on fresh leaf.
Ok, well I would like to get info on what experiences are like on 10-20 leaves because I have never really gone that far. I'm waiting for my glass pipe to arrive and when it does, I will be testing out my resin/extract that I made in that. It would be very useful to get specific effect reports. I usually get a strong sense of relaxation in the mind but I also get a little boost of energy that makes my eyes open a bit more. Once again, this is still at small doses.
It has isoquinoline alkaloids which are the group which opiates are in but I am not sure if the isoquinoline alkaloids in bay leaves are active like that. Anyways, it is like getting relaxed with a boost of energy. You get really calm but you get suddenly energized while still being calm. It's hard to explain. Also, that's in small doses. I'm not sure what would happen if you smoked like 10-30 bay leaves.
I will probably soon too. I just havent had a lot of time. Remember: bay leaf has trouble burning. It needs to be crushed up a lot and possibly mixed with something like tobacco. It does not need to be powder but it should be in 1 mm x 1mm bits about. Crushing it is easy thou
I have just finished straining out the solution. A little more plant material got in this time due to a filter rupturing a bit but I think it will still be fine. Pictures coming soon. I will start evaporating tomorrow or next week.
yeah bayleaf is good i have the stuff that comes in a little spice container, and it is dry so it crushes easy. it doesnt need to be crushed up that much if you have the dry stuff it burns really easy. I find that this stuff reduces my anxiety so yeah i got really into it. I probably wouldnt have if it wasnt for otb01 but i dont get one thing. Why are you posting this stuff in the salvia forums?
What kind of bay leaf are you using? Something in bay laurel gives me a really nasty headache. I don't mind the whole bayleaf but when the EO vaporizes the headache hits me. I'm guessing it is the combination of 1,8-cineole and pinene or maybe just 1,8-cineole. Well thought I'd give a heads up that there are some potential toxic and unpleasant effects.
@dacre4: Thanks man! It's nice to see that I'm reaching people. It's in the salvia forums because I like the community here and I dont see how it would fit in the other forums. @astroneurologist: Well, each person has a different reaction. I use bay leaf from the store, dried. Any bay leaf should work because they contain similar chemical constituents. I have never gotten a headache from it. At most, I got a little bit of a sore throat but that was because I smoked a lot of it at once. Maybe you smoked it too fast? Bay leaf tends to have a slightly harsh smoke.
I've never smoked the leaf. My experience is from the essential oil diffused on paper. Maybe adding cloves balances it.
Well, when I just smoke leaf, I never use cloves. I only use cloves in the resin because it tends to have a harsher smoke. Maybe the problem is that you are using an essential oil. You may have bought the oil from a manufacturer that has added some sort of additive which is causing headaches. I would just start out with plain leaf.
1. Put the leaves in the blender. Blend until almost powdered. (Pieces of 1/2 cm size or less. Some powder is good). 2. Measure volume of blended leaf. 3. Pour 2x of that volume of 75% or above alcohol (ethanol/drinking alcohol, i used 80-something%) in to a sealable container. 4. Now, transfer the bay leaves into the container too. 5. Seal tightly and shake really hard for a bit. 6. Let sit for a long time in the dark and room temperature or slightly cool but not hot. 7. Shake once in the morning and once at night each day. 8. This should be done for at least 3 days. 9. Evaporate by putting in a dish under a fan away from heat and sunlight. Heat and sunlight may promote the breakdown of some of the compounds.
