So, I'm trying to find a hookup... I normally grow, but had to destroy the plants b/c the cable guy spotted them. So, now I have to resort to asking people I meet at festivals, on the street, etc. if they are holding/know of a hookup. (My friends with possible hookups haven't been able to come through.) My problem is, I'm 42 years old, and look like your basic "mom." I have no problem talking to strangers, though. Soooo...my question is, how should I ask so that I don't a) Sound like a complete ass; and b) Sound like a narc. I keep hearing people say that I need to approach people who look like stoners. That's obvious enough, but what words do I use? There's got to be some kind of phraseology to make people realize I'm the stoner I am. Please help! I have three months before my next crop is ready, and Hempfest Ohio is this coming weekend! And thanks.

OhOhOH. I thought hempfest was 3 months away and that's wayyy too long to go without smoking. If hempfest is a week away then you should definitly be ok. I was confused at why a seasoned grower needed help scoring pot. If she sells then she could ask her buyers if they have any alternate hookups, but if she just grew to smoke then she might not have many people around her that can help. Still just reading these boards should give people an idea of how we act and speak. Even if we stay away from steryotypes, there are still things that set us apart from other cultures. Do you have any children? If you have any kids in high school then you could talk to them even.
Just go up to someone that looks like a pothead and ask him/her if she/he is "cool". Go from there. That's what I do if I'm about to spark one up and there's people around that I don't know. You can also to do the joint smoking hand motion when asking if they are cool, but not needed just helps.
jimaug87: I grow strictly for my husband and I to smoke, and occasionally give away to friends. Never sold, never will. I've been out of the buying loop for a good four years. This'll be the first time I've run out during that time. And I do have a 16 year old daughter, but NO WAY am I ready to come out to her yet. I've dropped hints here and there, and there's a good chance she suspects, but she is VERY conservative (how does that happen, anyway?), and I'm going to wait a while longer before I tell her. I think if she knew that I get high every night, she'd crap. But, back to the topic: thank you all for your replies. If anyone has any more, I'd love to hear 'em.
Too bad about that cable guy. Maybe its time to design an extension to your house - how about a high walled garden... good luck on your quest. (seriosly, when I was a kid, I had a friend who lived in a spansh style house -with an open courtyard in the center... wouldn't that be practical?)
My mom asked me for weed today... she is one of the few to be bummed to hear me say "no" I was brought up extremly liberal and sometimes I forget there are people that don't understand. I'm sure you are an excellent mother, and I'm sorry you and your daughter can't share a joint as my mom and I can. If you see someone that looks like a stoner and ask to borrow his lighter for a cigg or soemthing, check out the bottom of it. If he smokes bowls theres probly some black on the corner from the ash. I know mine does. Then you can just say, "Don't worry, I'm cool. Do you smoke?" while making a joint holding pose
If anyone ever came to me on the street and asked if I was "cool", I would run away as fast as my legs would carry me. To me that sounds like the most steriotypical thing an undercover would ask. If you actually want to get some just say "Anybody know where to score some pot?".
lol and get a citation or something for solicitation or conspiracy to buy illegal drugs or something..i dunno i could hve just made those up but theres no way id ask that in public. no way.
